Title: The Understanding Machine

Abstract:
One of the still-distant goals of AI is to generate understanding out of raw data.  After all, a brain is a machine that can do this.  Inspired by how the visual cortex appears to operate, combined with a simple algebra for manipulating an abstraction of the structures that arise, we look at what happens when we apply this to trying to understand the one-dimensional world of binary addition problems.  Starting with raw data, and then mechanically applying the simplifying rules of the algebra, we indeed reach a new understanding, yielding a new binary addition algorithm.
