Sunny's mother passed away yesterday and the cremation was on today morning. We have a sense of attachment with her as a loving mother and contentious personality. She always appeared smiling, caring and elegant. As flames from her funeral pire rose, I was in a journey down memory lanes. It was in the same place we little kids of kollayil wandered around in the late seventies with our fantasies and plays. At that time, Sunny's home was our most sought after kindergarten of Kollayil. His elder sister, Santha Chechi was our mam. A thatched shed in front of his home was our classroom. We still remember the cool and greenish ambiance inside it. There was a small coconut tree beside it. That bore yellowish coconuts aplenty. Our playground was behind the home. A narrow trucking lane went down the field amidst bushes. We used to ran through it howling aloud. However we feared to go far away. The madankavu, the abode of ghosts is nearby. Sunny's mother kept smiling. Her smile traversed through decades. We ourself and our land passed through many a dramatic changes by this time. But she kept smiling at us despite all turbulences of life. She quickly recognized us by name. She calmly en quired about our well being. She gave us something sweet whenever we went home. She is from the past generation of our lovefull mothers. We miss them. And we will miss them more as time passes more ahead. I pay her my tributes. We all Kollayilites deeply condole in her departure. RIJAM

The word contentious appears in the second line may be read as CONTENDED. The typing error is regretted. Rijam
