I am sending the details of the Origin and Khas-Ghar of Ambastha for your information.
AMBASTHAS--- THEIR ORIGIN & KHAS-GHAR
As per the details available at Inter-net, in ancient time, there was a kingdom named as Ambast which was located in between Chandra-Bhaga (Present Chenab river) and Airwart(Present Ravi river). This discussion of Ambast kingdom is also mentioned in Brahmna-Purana. The residents of the kingdom were called as Ambasth. Padini also called the residents of South-East region of Kashmir as Ambastha. The son of Shri Chitragupta, Himvaan had held the post of minister there and his generations were also settled there. People there were very brave and fought along with Kauravas in Mahabharat.
In the Brihad-dharma Purana, the Ambasthas and Vaidyas were considered as the same caste, in its list of 36 castes but another text, the Brahma Vaivarta Purana considered them as two separate sub-caste. Bharatmallik (17 century), the author of the “Chandraprabhava” and “Bhattitika” has introduced himself as both Vaidya and Ambastha, which indicates that both Vaidya and Ambastha were considered as same one sub-caste in early medieval Bengal.
The Ambastha Kayastha followed a system of “ Khas-Ghar” primarily for practising exogamy. The surname of an Ambasthas is the identifier of their “Khas-Ghar”, that is, the village (around Rajgriha in Magadha) where they were settled after they were brought from Takshila by Chandragupta Maurya on the advice his mentor Chanakya. I do not know the entire names of Ambasthas’ Khas-Ghar. However, some of the names of Ambasthas’ Khas-Ghar, as known to me, are as mentioned as hereunder--
