Youneed to hold shift while you frame if you want to see the laser light. But forgot about framing for the moment. If you push the fire button in LightBurn (not the HW button), do you see any light? Put the power up to 2-3% if required. Make sure your goggles are on.

What happens when you use the Fire button in the Move window? Do you get any light produced at all? Leave framing and running a job to the side for the moment. Just need to see if LightBurn can successfully command the controller to enable the laser.


Can not fire via Lightburn. Only method to fire after the failure is to test fire on the Opt Laser hardware adapter itself. In Lightburn, when the Fire Button is enabled and pressed, the border turns red but it does not fire the laser, nor when holding [shift] and commanding a Frame move.


We are new to using Lightburn, but I have experience with a Co2 laser from many years ago. One of the features the software had was to run the job as a test without actually having the laser on. We have found the preview within the software, but that is not what I am looking for. Hopefully this question makes sense, and thank you for any assistance that anyone can offer.


Thank you for the slap upside the head. Certainly I am not the first person to want to do this. However, nowhere have I also never seen others do or mention this in beginner videos other than drawing a frame around their target. Seems like a lot of time is wasted in setting up jobs, but again, this grasshopper still has much to learn before the pebble can be taken from the hand! (dates my age I guess, referring to the old Kung Fu TV series).


The information on the 14W seems hard to find in one place, but by using a few bits here and there, and then setting up my own test card I have found settings that work pretty well for a range of materials for text and in-fill. I work in Metric, but my test matrix is basically 3x3.

Speeds 40 mm/sec, 50, 60

Laser Power 100%, 80%, 60%.


In developing the test card, an earlier version was double cross hatched, 25 mm/sec, 100% power, and this burnt about 1/2 way through 7mm ply. Lots of smoke, some flames. Not the result I was hoping for.


I did some test runs on 1/4" MDF yesterday trying to cut through and had success at 100% power, 15 IPM, and 20 passes and also success at 100%, 30, and 20. On a subsequent test, the circle fell out well before 10 passes when running at 30 IPM. So I ended the day being more confused about what it takes to cut MDF than when I started. There are just so many combinations of power, speed, and passes.


I did some laser cutting tests on 7mm plywood today, which turned out much better than expected. Last week I cut 4mm marine ply, with setting that were too fast, and 20+ repeats were required to get through the 4mm.

Gil Poznanski looks at the dangers of some plastic products made with chlorine. Laser cutting plastics that contain chlorine is dangerous and deadly. It releases dangerous chlorine gas which is corrosive to you and your laser.


There is a very quick test you can do before using any material in your laser cutter to check for chlorine. Called the Beilstein test, this test uses very basic equipment and can be done in seconds.




One of the replies recommended using LightBurn to talk to the Long Mill laser instead of exported gcode from LB and loading it into gSender to send to the Long Mill laser. Bucky replied that he was doing that now.


@alanan. The file linked is a power speed matrix I created for LightBurn. It is based upon an A4 sheet of paper (297 x 210mm) and I used this file for finding the best power and speed setting for 3mm plywood. None of the components are grouped so you can click on any of the cut colours and adjust the speed. Adjusting the power setting is done from the shape properties tab. Here you can change the power settings in any place within the matrix.


Ideally, you would only need to adjust the feed speed because the power runs at evenly spaced intervals from 10% up to 100%. I deliberately had the settings for speed very slow because they will show you at what point you will get soot stains for each material and also when the sharp edges become a little frazzled. This file is slow and will take about 3 hours to complete. The patches are 20 x 10mm in size which should give you a reasonable amount of stock to compare the finishes.


the cleanest file up close is the 20% power at 500mm/min. There is a slight indent of around 1/20th of a mm. If fine finish was really important, I would choose the 10% power patch at 500mm/min. This one has no indented plywood. I use these matrix patch tests on all stock materials which I have never used previously.


While showing some results of too slow a speed or too much power, I have a couple of files that demonstrate this very well. I was hoping to carve some sort of Aztec lookalike file that was not quite a calendar. Unless they are done at a large size, they can be very fussy. I suspect that toolpaths can be a nightmare with such busy illustrations.


The next image is a look at the SVG outlines which would be used to create the toolpaths. It is a bit fussy looking and could stand some judicious editing to simplify the design. However the burn is very clean with no soot or over burned areas. Power was set to 10% and speed was 500mm/min on 3mm poor quality plywood.


Hi @alanan. Ah, that was my misreading of your post. Nevertheless, I managed to post a chart that may help other folk. The key is in graduating the power setting via the shape properties tab, which I did not think was especially obvious to the new users.


The 15-kilowatt laser weapon is the ninth Raytheon has produced in McKinney, Texas. Previous tests and demonstrations were conducted in other states where appropriate firing ranges already exist. With the successful test on the BCDC Innovation Proving Ground (IPG), Raytheon can now design, produce and test laser weapons in Texas.




A team of experts transported the laser weapon to the RELLIS campus for final adjustments, and the calibrations and tests performed on the laser weapon included tracking, targeting and destroying multiple drone targets while fine-tuning system parameters. The system will be shipped to the United Kingdom in October for final integration and delivery to the U.K. Ministry of Defense.




When Raytheon representatives visited BCDC in February 2023, the BCDC team anticipated the primary discussion topic would be related to directed energy testing inside the Ballistic, Aero-optic and Materials (BAM) range, which is scheduled for completion in Spring 2024, and ongoing research at the Texas A&M Aerospace Laboratory for Lasers, ElectroMagnetics and Optics (ALLEMO). Following a full overview and tour, Raytheon officials saw an opportunity to test both weapon systems and potential platforms using the IPG, and they inquired about the ability to conduct open-air shots on the IPG.

I bought a used printer and in several prints, I got not good print quality. After checking all mirrors I understand that it is a laser.

Contacting with support in my country gives not good result because its only 2 ways, changing to Form 3 or refurbished Form2. And this cost too much for me.

I found topics from @a_moran and his experiments with laser.

I tried to cut the unfocused part with iris it helps but not the best result I want.

But I choose another way to solve this. I contact the factory that made lasers and they made me a sample.

Need some calibrating on center position but this can be solved.

I hope soon we will got not expensive laser for our Form2.
