A copy of a post to Ancestry today.
Hi, sherjone7, I am sorry no one has noticed your
post a year and a half ago on the Ancestry.com Knowlton bulletin
board, but ever since Ancestry.com buried the bulletin boards and
got rid of the listserves, we have been unable to keep up with it
all. I will message you with this also in case you do not see it
here.
This Charles appears to have separated from Anna after
Robert's birth and to have returned to the NY area because he
appears in a NY state 1875 census in Rochester, Monroe Co., NY,
35, a barber [do you read that as barber?] who was born in Yates
Co., NY. [Why NY state censuses are gold.]
The only Knowlton near Yates Co. ca 1840 is a Russell
Knowlton, aged 20-29, in Steuben Co., and he has a boy under 5 in
his household.
In a history of Yates Co., vol 1, pp 751/2, Rev Simeon
Sutherland's history is described with one line on daughter Lorana
marrying Russell Knowlton and moving to Ohio. So it is possible
that Charles was born in NY, then grew up in Ohio before moving
back East. In 1870 and 1880, Charles' birthplace is given as NY;
and in the latter census, his parents are said to have been born
there too. I note that Charles' daughter, Geneva, on various
censuses has her father's birthplace given as NJ (1880), Ohio
(1900), Pennsylvania (1910), and USA (1920 and 1930). This
variation may come from stories she heard of her father's life.
On the 1850 Ohio census, Huron Co., Russell and Lorana appear
in New London with several children. He is 37. At first glance
there is no Charles, but you will note that the family seems to
have moved to Ohio twice and were back in NY ca 1841 when a son
named Asael was born. Could this be Charles A Knowlton, as yours
was sometimes called? There is also a 2 yr old girl born in OH.
Russell's probate date was 14 Jul 1870 in Huron Co. He may be the
Henry Russell on the 1860 census in the same place with a son
named Asel born in NY age 19 and one of 12 named Charles D in
place of the girl. Perhaps this is a blended family with new
wife--but Lorana survives until 1879--I will leave you to check
Huron Co., OH, for all the Knowltons there.
Later: Russell is #5076, b 1813 in NY. He had children Sherman,
Henry A, Asad [Asal?], and Tasy, my research.
I note that he also had a brother Henry #5077.
They were the children of Ackley (1782-1886?) #2525 b CT or
MA and Lydia Sherman Knowlton (b ca 1790), and they moved to
Lorain and Huron Cos. in Ohio.
Ackley was the son of Rev Gideon Knowlton and Polly Hayden,
and they resided in Belchertown, MA [Ah, remember all our work
around Belchertown!] He died 15 Aug 1810, and Polly died 29 Aug
1822. Someone else can follow them back to Ipswich.
