I posted this today on wikitree under Samuel Purdy:
A supposed Charity Purdy b ca. 1709, dau of Samuel Purdy and Clorinda
Penelope Strang, appears in many Ancestry trees with no sources except other
trees. What is the source of all the other children from the
Purdy/Strang marriage? For many years I have sought the wives of Robert
Knowlton (ca. 1704 - ca. 1798) and of his son, Ephraim Knowlton (ca.
1740 - ca. 1784) of Bedford, Westchester Co., NY, without, of course,
much success due to the British burning of Bedford in 1779.
In the
recent past I took the autosomal test at Ancestry and now have hundreds
of matches of under 40 cM (many in one cluster in My Heritage) related
to people whose ancestors either went to Canada as Loyalists or were
Southerners although neither appears in my direct tree of 35 years of
research. I finally realized that many of these tiny matches related to
the large Purdy family and others who married into it. [Half my ancestry
did not immigrate to the USA until 1933; and the half that was here
since 1640 did not leave MA/NY until 1920 when they immigrated to
NJ :>)]
Robert had three known children: Charity, Ephraim (named for
his paternal grandfather), and Elizabeth. This is the first time the
name Charity has appeared in our family. I wondered if anyone had any
ideas about where the names of Samuel's children came from since he did
not leave a will or a Bible record. My tree (on Rootsweb) was kindly
entered in wikitree by Samuel Knowlton a few years ago, and I am happy
to give more details.
