Please read carefully the whole article and replies.

Actually, these things have been half shut down for a few years already.  One already could not post to the mailing lists, just read old entries, why I moved my own lists to Groups IO and took advantage of Sam's Knowlton list under Google.  However, none have had as much business as early Rootsweb.com ones.  Part of that is changes on the Internet, more people using social media instead of mailing lists.  I encourage all of you to post your Knowlton problems (including the surnames of women marrying into the family) here.

As far as the Rootsweb.com trees, the ones shown by Ancestry.com are full of ads, lacking many sources, and unable to produce Register Reports except one generation at a time, renumbering for any length.  I urge all of you to keep a database of your genealogical work on your computer, anything simple that allows sources, footnotes, and good reports.  For those with Ancestry.com trees already, the work can be synced to the Roots Magic program on your computer.  Doug Raymond, whose obituary I just posted, did his original work in Ancestry.com for the ease of entry (his opinion) and then synced it DAILY to the program on his computer.  This will guarantee you have your own work under your control whatever Ancestry.com , which I subscribe to also, decides to do in the future.

Elizabeth,
Another computer-resident software that Syncs nicely with Ancestry is Family Tree Maker, currently being supported and maintained by MacKiev.   It's pricer than RootsMagic, but I've used FTM since it was a DOS based program and it is highly functional and much more stable since MacKiev acquired it several years ago.

Good to hear from you Jim.
I mistakenly thought you could no longer Sync with Family Tree Maker, which is exactly what Doug Raymond used in the past.  Thank you for the information.
This list is useful just for corrections like that one.

So, now, People, how about some posts? even if they are about what you have added to wikitree, etc.  Many beginners need to learn the myriad of basics that are not part of Ancestry.com
