I heard only recently that long-time avid genealogist, Douglas
Tanner Raymond, great great grandson of Phoebe Knowlton Raymond, #
2903, had died in January.
Doug and I frequently corresponded after I had the pleasure of
meeting him in 2012 and being taken to see the old Raymond homestead
(the NEW house, built ca. 1850) in Bedford, NY, where his brother
Ted still lives.
After that brief meeting and conversation, Doug created an amazing
tree on Ancestry.com that he synced religiously with (then) Family
Tree Maker--I believe one would use Roots Magic now--because I had
hounded
him to keep his work on his own computer as well as out in
Ancestry.com land, which changes from time to time, as all
businesses do. When I had computer problems, he always had a
solution. When we were all
losing Rootsweb.com and its marvels, he shepherded our mailing lists
onto Groups IO. Oh, he was a wonder of a fourth cousin, and I was
so fortunate to connect with him when we were in our 60s.
Here is his obituary:
Douglas Tanner Raymond, 77, of Ambler, PA, following a long battle
with cancer, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2023, surrounded
by his family. Doug was born April 22, 1945, in Hyannis,
Massachusetts to the late Edward A. Raymond II and Louise Tanner
Raymond. He graduated from Harvard College with a Bachelor of Arts
in 1973. He was a Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand from 1965-1968.
He also served in the United States Army, in the Corps of Engineers,
OCS, Airborne Division, and served 18 months in Vietnam in the 585th
Engineer Battalion. Doug retired in 2009 from Moore Products/
Siemens, where he worked as a mechanical design and software
engineer for 22 years. He enjoyed staying active, and loved
windsurfing, hang gliding, free-diving, riding motorcycles, and
ballroom dancing [especially tango EWK]. Doug was interested in [no,
AVID about] genealogy, and created an extensive family tree of the
Raymond and Tanner families. He was accomplished in many foreign
languages including both European and Asian languages. He is
survived by his wife Hannelore Wenger, and his four siblings, Carol
Raymond, James Raymond, Edward Raymond III, and Nancy Raymond. Doug
will be interred at Bedford Union Cemetery in Bedford, NY. Photos
