I have a commercial account on oovoo.com
That account lets me engage in video conferencing with up to 6 live
participants at a time. Not everyone who wants to can be in the room.
We should use email or something to coordinate that -- or signup
beforehand.
That account also lets me record video conferences.
That account also lets me share my desktop.
Using those features, these ideas come to mind.
When talks using slides are happening, I can paint the slides on the
screen from my desktop, thus enabling them to be captured in a
recording and shown to those logged into the conference.
To make that work, it seems worth recording one talk at a time. We can
then put those videos up at knowledgefederation.org in the wiki.
To make that work, we will need a microphone with a long cord to reach
my laptop.
To make that work, we will need reliable internet at the university. I
think it was reliable in the past.
For roundtable talks, I can just aim my computer at the large room,
keep a microphone roving, and record away.
I am not sure this will work; right now, it's all theory, but seems possible.
Keep in mind, logging into oovoo will entail being awake during
daylight hours, Croatian time.
Cheers
Jack
Generally, I find it difficult to follow video, and even when I do,
it's hard to ask questions, comment, talk the person sitting next to
you, ... Some groups like using IRC as a backchannel; others find it
distracting. If attendees have mental bandwidth for sharing,
microblogging (e.g. twitter) can be a good way to give a sense of
what's going on (also in easily digestible bits). Blog summaries --
even when the info is raw -- can also help.
"Amplifying" is another way to think about spreading the ideas of the
conference beyond a single place, time, and group:
