Sibelius Error 40201 Undefined external error (MMSystem/out)
Posted by wfeg - 25 Jun 09:06AM Hide picture Due to Microsoft Windows 10 April Update, my desktop computer crashed, and Windows 10 had to be re-installed. I then had to re-instal all my programs.
When I came to run Sibelius, I got the error:
Sibelius Error 40201 Undefined external error (MMSystem/out)
Furthermore, when I tried to play a composition that had worked before, it would not play (no sound). Playback Devices just showed General MIDI (Basic) and nothing else. Under Available Devices was Track 16 (my MOTU sound card) but it was greyed out.
Any hints what could be the problem?
Should I re-instal Sibelius?

Please tell us which version number of Sibelius you have.

Yes- quite right. I forgot to instal the Sounds Library.
I have it (E: Sibelius 7 Sounds) on an external drive. How can I get Sibelius to point to this location? How do I update the sounds to a more recent version? I know there is a Sibelius 7.5 Sound Library Updater, but I have forgotten how to access this.
You help is appreciated.

Thanks for your speedy and reliable replies. Much appreciated.
1) I have Sibelius 8.1.1 Build 126.
2) Screen shots (.JPG) of Playback Devices and Audio Engine Options attached.
3) No- I have not installed the Sibelius Sound library- I forgot about that.
3) My Sibelius 7 sound library still exists on an external drive at E:\Sibelius 7 Sounds. How can I point Sibelius to this folder without having to re-instal Sibelius 7 Sounds?
4) Where is the Sibelius 7.5 Sounds Updater? Is there a more recent version of Sibelius Sounds?

The only attachment was a distorted/corrupt screen-shot of Audio Engine Options, which revealed that Sibelius either (a) failed to find any connected audio output device, or (b) failed to open the MOTU audio output device.
Maybe you have not yet re-installed the drivers for the sound cards? The evidence of the failure is the latency figure of zero. You will not get any audio output from Sibelius while that latency figure shows zero.
> How can I point Sibelius to this folder without having to re-instal Sibelius 7 Sounds?
You need to create the Windows Registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Avid\Sibelius Sounds\Sibelius 7 Sounds\ContentPath
Unless you are an expert on the dangerous business of manipulating the Windows Registry, the easiest way of creating that registry key is to run the Sibelius 7 Sounds installer. If that registry key exists but does not point to a valid Sibelius 7 Sounds installation, upon launching Sibelius will ask the user to locate the installation.
> 4) Where is the Sibelius 7.5 Sounds Updater? Is there a more recent version of Sibelius Sounds?
The latest version of Sibelius 7 Sounds is 7.5.1 and the updater to bring any Sibelius 7 Sounds installation to 7.5.1 level should be available to you in your Avid account at:

Robin
Thank you very much for your detailed information.
I used the Sibelius 7.5 Sounds Updater, which asked for my Sibelius 7 Sounds destination (E:\Sibelius 7 Sounds).
I also checked Regedit:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Avid\Sibelius Sounds\Sibelius 7 Sounds\ContentPath
and it was showing my Sibelius 7 Sounds destination of E:\Sibelius 7 Sounds, and Sibelius now plays a composition file with sound.
I will have to find the best Audio Engine for my MOTU sound card. I can't remember exactly which one that I previously used. But, to get it to work, I used MOTU Main Out (WASAPI). Do you have a better recommendation? Is WASAPI the best one to use?
Thanks again for your assistance.

Posted by Robin Walker - 26 Jun 08:29PM Hide picture If you have alternate interfaces available for the same physical output device, then the order of quality, from best to worst, is:
1. ASIO
2. WASAPI
3. DS
4. MME
With ASIO and WASAPI, you might find that no other application can output audio while Sibelius is using that interface.

Sib. 8.x: Error 40201 MMSYSTEM/OUT
Posted by Kiyren - 05 Oct 08:33PM Hide picture Hello,
I encountered this error a while back, and unfortunately I can't recall the cause because at the time I didn't have time to worry about it. The effect is that it will not allow me to use the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, either by itself or in conjunction with Sibelius Player as I used to. From reading other threads related to this issue, I'm guessing this has something to do with my installing ASIO4ALL relatively recently. Here are the relevant specs as best I can figure at this point:
Sibelius 8.4.2 Build 231
Windows 10
ASIO4ALL v2.14
I read in other threads that the answer usually seems to lie in fiddling with the ASIO4ALL setup. Is that the dialogue box within Sibelius? Play>Setup>Audio Engine Options>ASIO Setup (Screenshot attached) or is there some other way to configure it?
I also saw one user fixed it by running the 64 bit version of "the program" (unsure if they meant of ASIO or Sibelius) but I'm not sure how to change or determine which version of either program I am currently running.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Attachment ASIO4ALL.png (506K) Back to top Allthreads Re: Sib. 8.x: Error 40201 MMSYSTEM/OUT

If you have Windows set to use your ASIO device for system sounds it will be locked, and Sibelius will give you this error.

- any "Playback Configuration" including the "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth" player device;
- any "Interface" setting (in "Audio Engine Options") involving ASIO.
So, if you are using ASIO, you must not select any Playback Configuration using "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth".

Hi Bill,
I'm pretty green with this sort of thing. How can I tell if Windows is trying to use ASIO4ALL elsewhere so I can stop it from doing so? Back to top Allthreads Re: Sib. 8.x: Error 40201 MMSYSTEM/OUT

It is not possible for Windows to use ASIO4ALL for audio output.
Other DAWs or notation applications might be able to, but not Windows.

Posted by Kiyren - 13 Oct 08:44PM Hide picture Ok, those are two very conflicting answers, then.
I'm also surprised by your original response, Robin, as I saw on other posts with similar issues that you said ASIO and Wavetable cause a lot of issues with each other, but not that they're entirely incompatible. Has that changed recently?
And quite frankly I forget why I got ASIO in the first place. All I remember is it's supposed to make things faster somehow. Is it actually worth this hassle to keep using it? Back to top Allthreads Re: Sib. 8.x: Error 40201 MMSYSTEM/OUT
Posted by Mike Lyons - 14 Oct 05:34AM Hide picture Kiyren, What I think Robin is saying is that it is that ASIO drivers are single client drivers. If one audio device is using the ASIO driver then no other device can access that driver at the same time.
ASIO4ALL is a very specific type of driver that windows cannot access, but which can be selected as the ASIO driver for sibelius and other ASIO clients as their output driver. ASIO4ALL is intended for use in circumstances where a device specific driver is not available. (perhaps for older hardware.)
If you are on windows, there may be a WASAPI driver that you can use. Just make sure that you don't have WASAPI/ASIO and General MIDI(Basic) selected at the same time as that will cause an error.

No, it has always been the case that any ASIO interface is completely incompatible with the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth playback device.
> I forget why I got ASIO in the first place. All I remember is it's supposed to make things faster somehow.
ASIO is wonderful: but it only works with player devices that produce audio output, not players that produce MIDI output.
