I'm on Windows 7, 32-bit processor and I'm trying to set up emacs and AUCTeX with RefTeX. I've followed Joachim Schlosser's english guide and Youtube tutorial in German (even if I don't understand German).

When I open a *.tex file, there are no Preview or LaTeX menus, instead a spartan TeX menu that doesn't offer the possibility to customize AUCTeX. Can someone please help me get AUCTeX to work the preview-latex feature that is supposed to display math expressions inside the buffer and not in a separate pdf program such as SumatraPDF? I've also downloaded the appropriate png.dll and zlib.dll (see guide above).

I found the existing answer unsatisfactory. MikTeX already ships with tools to convert PDF to SVG, and to compile LaTeX to PDF, so the dependencies seem rather artificial. I have found that one can build a newer version of the LaTeX extension which uses these tools -latex-miktex

Whenever you move l2h elsewhere, (which you should avoid doing ifpossible), or your latex, ghostscript, or perl changes location, youmust rerun install_l2h. Before doing so, exit all other l2hwindows. (If you do move l2h, afterwards you will also need to updateall document folders outside l2h that you are still working on. Toupdate a document folder, replace the "l2h_menu" file in it bya copy of the updated one in the "example" folder of l2h.)

Texmaker can be used on a computer running Windows 11 or Windows 10. It comes in both 32-bit and 64-bit downloads.Other operating systems: The latest Texmaker version from 2023 is also available for Mac.

The latest version of IguanaTex (currently v1.60 -- May 20, 2022) should work for all users, on 32-bit or 64-bit Windows, running 32-bit or 64-bit MS Office, on PowerPoint 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, as well as Office 365; and on any Mac with PowerPoint 2019 or Office 365.

Installation:

  • Load the add-in:
in "File" > "Options" > "Add-Ins" > "Manage:", choose "PowerPoint Add-Ins" then "Go...", then click "Add New", select the .ppam file in the default Add-In folder or in the folder where you downloaded it, then "Close"
  • Create and set a temporary file folder:
IguanaTex needs access to a folder with read/write permissions to store temporary files.
    • The default is "C:\Temp\". If you have write permissions under "C:\", create the folder "C:\Temp\". You're all set.
    • If you cannot create this folder, choose/create a folder with write permission at any other location. In the IguanaTex tab, choose "Main Settings" and put the path to the folder of your choice. You can also use a relative path under the presentation's folder (e.g., ".\" for the presentation folder itself).
  • (Optional, for pdflatex/xelatex/lualatex support) Install and set path to GhostScript and ImageMagick:
To use the PDF to PNG conversion (i.e., with pdflatex, xelatex and lualatex) instead of the default DVI to PNG one, you need to install GhostScript (gs9.26 is the currently recommended version, as issues with 9.27 have been reported) and ImageMagick and set the appropriate full paths to gswin32c.exe/gswin64c.exe (note the "c"!) and convert.exe in the "Main Settings" window. When installing ImageMagick, make sure to check the box to "Install development headers and libraries for C and C++" and (in recent versions) to "Install legacy utilities (e.g. convert)". Download links are provided in the Main Settings window.
  • (Optional, for vector graphics support) Install and set path to TeX2img:
To use vector graphics output, you need to install TeX2img (here is the direct download link for recommended version 2.1.0). After unpacking TeX2img somewhere on your machine, please run TeX2img.exe once to let it set the various paths to latex/ghostscript, then set the full path to TeX2imgc.exe (note the "c"!) in the "Main Settings" window.
  • Note: in the "Main Settings" window, make sure to expand any default path including %USERPROFILE% by clicking on the "..." button and navigating to the proper location. %USERPROFILE% unfortunately leads to issues when launching processes.
  • The code assumes that you have LaTeX installed and that the "pdflatex" command can be found by the system. To confirm this, you can open a command window and type pdflatex.

Many thanks for this piece of wisdom. I was using MikTeX and TeXnicCenter for preparing LaTeX documents. I came know about Emacs and AUCTeX five days back. But after five days (and night) struggle I could not get the preview-latex results in my Emacs windows. I read every manual mutliple times. Even on net (Google) I made many searches but end up to get the same information again and again which could not help. Every thing was ok with my system. But few minutes earlier I read one specific line about ghostscript that it should be of version 8.71 not later. I simply uninstall ghostscript 9.02, download and install ghostscript 8.71 and lo . . . it works on very first run. I got the preview of my LaTeX document.

I want to add only one thing that there is only one image support dll (i.e. libXpm.dll) included in the precompiled emacs 23.3 which you have mentioned also. For image support (like png in preview-latex) you have to download libpng.dll which should be of version 1.2 or later and copy it in the bin directory of emacs. I got libpng14_14.dll from

I use latex+dvi+ps+pdf+pdfviewer routine in Texstudio and Winedt. But it seems quite difficult to set such a routine in emacs+auctex.
I saw some tips to configure latex+dvi+ps+pdf. But after the pdf file is generated by ps2pdf, I can not find a simple way to open the pdf file.
The only way I know is to switch to PDF mode and use VIEW to open the pdf file. It is not very convenient, because I can bundle all the commands to a key in texstudio.

Yes, psfrag: since it uses an extra script to replace the strings (at least it did when I last used it some years ago), this behavior is not implemented in the standard preview-latex functionality. If this is a show-stopper for you, you might want to contact the authors via their mailing list and ask about.

The Windows version of ImageMagick is self-installing. Simply click on the appropriate version below and it will launch itself and ask you a few installation questions. Versions with Q8 in the name are 8 bits-per-pixel component (e.g. 8-bit red, 8-bit green, etc.), whereas, Q16 in the filename are 16 bits-per-pixel component. A Q16 version permits you to read or write 16-bit images without losing precision but requires twice as much resources as the Q8 version. Versions with dll in the filename include ImageMagick libraries as dynamic link libraries. Unless you have a Windows 32-bit OS, we recommend this version of ImageMagick for 64-bit Windows:

TeXstudio can be used on a computer running Windows 11 or Windows 10. Previous versions of the OS shouldn't be a problem with Windows 8 and Windows 7 having been tested. This plugin displays latex formulas and uses a few external programs that must be installed on codeBeamer's host for this plugin. This guide describes the installation steps for making the plugin functional.

While playing with the Borg R-wrapper, I ran into difficulties loading the shared borg.dll library into R as a result of mingw compiling for a 32-bit system when I was using the 64 bit version of R. After running the following command from the Windows command line,

A: This problem occurs when IguanaTex is unable to locate LaTeX in order to compile your Latex file. To verify that this is indeed the problem, click on Start, then on Run, then type cmd and press Enter. In the new window type latex and press Enter. You should see the Latex command prompt. If instead you receive an error message such as 'latex' is not recognized as an internal or external command, then there is a problem with your installation of LaTeX. Verify that you have LaTeX installed and that the version you are using is still supported by its developers. Reinstalling the latest version if necessary should resolve most problems. On Windows, the most common LaTeX installations are MikTex and TeX Live.

A: This is due to a bug in the way Powerpoint inserts images, and, as far as I know, only occurs for very large images (the behaviour is erratic, and does not only depend on the image size; it's not clear what exactly triggers the bug). As a workaround, you can try to split your display into smaller parts. If you are using the "slides" class (e.g., because you like the sans-serif fonts), I recommend switching to "article" class (do not forget to use \pagestyleempty) and using sans serif font, for example by following this guide.
There are also strange issues in the way PowerPoint handles PNG files created using dvipng. You may thus want to try switching to pdflatex or other engines that do not rely on dvipng.

A: Yes! One way is to use Latexmk for compilation (selected in the Main Settings). Another way to make this work is to select pdflatex as the compilation engine, and to add \usepackageauto-pst-pdf to your preamble.
