KYP - Toldos
Leilluy Nishmas HR’R Mordechai Ben Chaim Dovid Z’L
106 Pasukim (verses), 3 Perakim (chapters)
1st Aliyah (Kohen)
The Pasuk reminds us that Avraham gave birth to Yitzchak.
When Yitzchak is 40 years old, he marries Rivka the daughter of Besuel and the sister of Lavan.
Yitzchak Davens to Hashem because Rivka is barren and she becomes pregnant.
Rivka inquires of Hashem why she is having a hard pregnancy.
Hashem tells her that she has two nations in her womb which will separate and the might will pass from one to the other and the older will serve the younger.
As Rivka gives birth, the first comes out red and hairy so he is named Eisav.
The second son emerges with his hand holding his brother’s heel so he is named Yaakov.
Yitzchak is 60 years old when they are born.
The boys grow up and Eisav becomes a hunter; Yaakov spends his time in tents.
Yitzchak loves Eisav while Rivka loves Yaakov.
One day, while Yaakov is making a stew, Eisav arrives very hungry and asks for some of the red stuff because he is about to die.
Yaakov agrees on condition that Eisav sells his birthright to him; Eisav agrees and is asked to take an oath.
Yaakov then gives Eisav bread and lentil stew; Eisav eats, drinks and leaves.
There is a famine in the land.
Yitzchak travels to Avimelech the king of the Pelishtim in Gerar.
Hashem appears to Yitzchak and tells him not to go to Mitzraim but to stay in the land which Hashem will indicate to him and that Hashem will be with him, bless him and give him and his descendents these lands as Hashem promised Avrahamm.
Hashem explains to Yitzchak that He promised these lands to Avrahram on account of that he listened to Him, His decrees and His Torah.
2nd Aliyah (Levi)
Yitzchak settles in Gerar and, when asked about Rivka, he says that Rivka is his sister because he is afraid that they will kill him in order to take her.
One day Avimelech sees Yitzchak jesting with Rivka and asks Yitzchak why he said that she was his sister.
Yitzchak explains himself.
Avimelech warns his people that anyone who harms Yitzchak or his wife will be put to death.
Yitzchak plants crops and harvests 100 times more that it should normally produce because Hashem blessed him.
3rd Aliyah
Yitzchak becomes increasingly great and rich.
The Pelishtim start to envy him and stop up Yitzchak’s well that Avaraham had dug up.
Avimelech tells Yitzchak to move away because he has became mightier then him.
Yitzchak moves to the valley in Gerar and re-digs wells that Avarahm had dug up but the Pelishtim had stopped up.
When Yitzchak’s servants find a well of fresh water, the local herdsmen claim that it is theirs so he calls the well Eysek because he “got involved” with the well.
When Yitzchak’s servants find another well the herdsmen again quarrel over it so he calls it Sitnah.
They dig another well and no one quarrels with them so Yitzchak calls it Rechovos as Hashem has given him ample space and now he can be fruitful in the land.
4th Aliyah
Yitzchak goes to Bee-Sheva.
Hashem appers to Yitzchak and tells him not to fear because Hashem is with him, He will bless him and He will increase his descendents on account of Avraham.
Yitzchak builds a Mizbeach (altar), pitches his tent and his servants dig a well there.
Avimelech and Phicol, his general, go to Yitzchak to make a treaty with him because that they see that Hashem is with him.
5th Aliyah
In the morning both depart from Yitzchak.
Yitzchak’s servants report to him that they found water; Yitzchak calls the place Shiva.
The area is known as Beer-Sheva until this day.
At the age of 40, Eisav marries Yehudis Bas Beeri and Basmas Bas Aylon; both are from Chittim.
Yitzchak and Rivka are not happy about Eisav’s choice in wives.
When Yitzchak becomes old and blind he tells Eisav to hunt and bring him a nice meal to eat so he can give him a Bracha.
Rivka overhears this and tells Yaakov to bring her two young goats so she can prepare a nice meal for Yitzchak that Yaakov will bring to him so he can get the Brachos.
Yaakov objects that his father can still feel him and tell the difference between him and Eisav because the latter is hairy and he himself is not so he’ll end up with a curse instead.
Rikva answers that if it happens that let the curse go on her.
Rivka prepares the food and dresses Yaakov in Eisav’s garments and puts the goat skins on his hands so he feels hairy.
When Yaakov goes to Yitzchak, Yitzchak first asks him how he got everything done so soon to which Yaakov answers that Hashem helped him.
Yitzchak asks Yaakov to come close so he can feel his hands; they feel like Eisav’s hands.
Yitzchak says that it is the voice of Yaakov but the hands of Eisav.
Yitzchak blesses Yaakov.
Yitzchak then asks is he Eisav and Yaakov replies “I am.”
Yitzchak eats, drinks, smells the pleasant fragrance of Yaakov’s garments and gives him a Bracha.
6th Aliyah
Yitzchak blesses Yaakov that Hashem should give him plenty of sustenance; the nations and his brother shall bow down to him. Those who bless him will be blessed and the opposite is true.
At this point Eisav returns with his meal and Yitzchak trembles and asks who was it that had just been there and then says he shall remain blessed.
Eisav realizes what has happened and cries about that he was fooled by Yaakov twice regarding the birthright and now the regarding the Bracha.
Eisav begs for an additional Bracha; at first Yitzchak refuses but then he wishes Eisav good sustenance and that he shall live by the sword. Eisav shall serve Yaakov but when he is aggrieved he can cast of his yoke.
Eisav thinks to himself that after Yitzchak dies he intends to kill Yaakov.
Rivka is aware of Eisav’s intentions and has Yaakov flee to Lavan in Charan until Eisav will calm down.
Rivka tells Yizchak that she doesn’t want Yaakov to marry the daughters of Cheys.
Yitzchak blesses Yaakov and tells him to go to Lavan and marry a daughter of his.
Yitzchak blesses Yaakov that Hashem should bless him, make him numerous and bless him and his children with the Brachos of Avraham.
Yaakov goes on his way to Lavan in Padan-Aram.
7th Aliyah
Eisav observes that Yaakov does to what Yitzchak had told him to do which is not to marry from the daughters of Canaan.
Eisav marries Machalas Bas Yishmael because he sees that Yitzchak is not happy with the daughters of Canaan.
Haftorah (Malachi 1:1-2:8)
Malachis it the last Sefer in Neviim. Some say that Malachi is Ezra Hasofer.
Malachi prophesizes that Hashem loves Yaakov and hates Eisav.
Malachi rebukes Klal Yisroel who brings detestable offerings and show lack of respect to Hashem despite Hashem’s love for them.
If the Klal Yisroel does not heed to Hashem, Hashem will replace blessing with the opposite.
