KYP - Noach

Leilluy Nishmas HR’R Mordechai Ben Chaim Dovid Z’L

153 Pasukim (verses), 5.5 Perakim (chapters) - 0 Mitzvos in this Parsha.

1st Aliyah (Kohen)

Noach is a Tzaddik and walks in the ways of Hashem.

Noach’s 3 sons are Shem, Cham and Yafes.

The land is filled with corruption and robbery.

Hashem tells Noach that, on account of the robbery, Noach should make a Teyva because Hashem will destroy mankind.

The Teyva is to be 300 Amos long, 50 Amos wide and 30 Amos high with 3 decks, an entrance at its side and a window that ends 1 Amah from the top.

Hashem promises to bring a flood to destroy everything on earth, excluding Noach and his family and their families.

Noach is commanded to bring two of each specie (male and female of animals, birds and creeping things) as well as provisions into the Teyva.

Noach does as he is commanded.

2nd Aliyah (Levi)

Hashem tells Noach to enter the Teyva as he is found to be righteous in his generation.

Noach is to take 7 pairs (a male with its mate) of all Tahor animals and just 2 animals ( a male with its mate) of non-Tahor animals into the Teyva.

Birds are also to be brought (7 pairs, male with its mate) into the Teyva.

In 7 days Hashem will send the flood for 40 days and nights to destroy everything.

Noach is 600 years old when he, his wife, his 3 sons and their wives enter the Teyva.

All animals, birds etc. (Tahor and non-Tahor) enter the Teyva two by two.

After 7 days pass, the flood begins in the 2nd month on the 17th day; it rains for 40 days and nights.

3rd Aliyah

When the flood is on the earth for 40 days the Teyva floats above the earth.

The water line surpasses the mountaintops by 15 Amos.

All breathing creatures on earth die.

The waters strengthen for 150 days.

Hashem remembers Noach and the animals.

Hashem has the waters recede; after 150 days they completely disappear.

The Teyvah rests on Har Ararat on the 17th of the 7th month.

On the 1st of the 10th month, the mountains tops are visible.

At the end of 40 days, Noach sends out a Raven; it keeps going and returning until the waters recede.

Then Noach sends out a dove; it can not find where to stay so it returns to him.

Noach waits another 7 days and sends the dove again; it returns in the evening with an olive leaf.

Noach waits another 7 days and sends the dove again, this time it doesn’t return.

On the 1st of the 1st month in the 601st year, the surface of the earth is dry. On the 27th of the 2nd month the whole earth is fully dry.

4th Aliyah

Hashem commands Noach, his family and all of the animals to exit the Teyva and multiply.

Noach builds a Mizbeach and offers as a Korban every kind of Tahor animal to Hashem.

Hashem smells the aroma of the Korbanos and promises not to curse the ground nor kill all the living due to man’s Aveiros. Day and night and the four seasons shall never cease.

Hashem blesses Noach and his sons that they shall be many and will be feared by all other creatures.

Hashem tells Noach and his sons that they may eat any moving thing that lives but not while it is still living.

However, one may not kill another person.

5th Aliyah

Hashem makes a Bris (covenant) with Noach and his sons that never again shall there be a flood.

Hashem makes the rainbow to be his His reminder that He will never again make a flood.

6th Aliyah

Noach’s sons are Shem, Cham and Yefes.

Cham is the forefather of Canaan.

Noach plants a vineyard and becomes drunk.

While he unclothes himself, Cham sees him and tells his two brothers.

Shem and Yafes walk backwards towards their father and cover him.

When Noach is sober again he realizes what has happened and curses Cham to be a slave to his brothers.

Noach blesses Hashem the G-d of Shem and wishes Shem that Canaan will be a slave to him.

Noach wishesYafes to dwell in the tent of Shem and wishes Shem that Canaan will be a slave to him.

Noach lives 350 years after the flood and dies at the age of 950.

The Pasuk lists the generations of Shem, Cham and Yafes.

One notable descendant is Nimrod who stands out as the first mighty man on earth.

7th Aliyah

The whole earth speaks one language.

Mankind gets together in Shinar and decides to make bricks so they can build a tower with its top in the heavens so they can make a name for themselves.

Hashem descends to look at what they are trying to do and has them speak different languages so they can not understand one another.

Hashem also disperses them all over the earth.

Now the Pasuk lists the generations from Noach to Avraham.

Shem, Arpachshad, Shelach, Eyver, Peleg, Reu, Serug, Nachor, Terach ,Avram-Nachor, Haran, Lot.

Haran dies in Ur Kasdim during the lifetime of Terach.

Avram marries Saray; Nachor marries Milkah (Haran’s daughter).

Yiscah is Saray who is also the daughter of Haran; she is barren.

Terach takes Avram, Lot, Saray from Ur Kasdim to Charan in Eretz Canaan.

Terach dies in Charan at the age of 205 years.

Haftorah (Yeshaya 54:1 - 55:5 (Sefardim until 54:10)

Perek 54:1

Yeshaya tells the barren woman (Yerushalayim)

1) That she should not despair as she will have more children than those who presently have children.

2) Despite Hashem momentarily forsook her, she will not be humiliated.

3) Hashem will once again show her kindness and mercy.

4) Just as Hashem swore that the flood of Noach will never return, so Hashem swears that his wrath will not return against Klal Yisroel.

5) Even if her enemies gather together, Hashem will make them falter.

6) Any weapon that is sharpened against Klal Yisroel will not succeed.

Perek 55

Whoever is thirsty or hungry go buy without having money.

Why spend money or exert oneself without being satisfied?

Listen to Hashem and one will be satisfied.

Parsha Nuggets

1) Question: Why does the Pasuk 6:9 say that Noach is a complete Tzaddik and in Pasuk 7:1 it just says the word Tzaddik?

Answer: The Gemorah (Eruvin 18b) says that from here we see that one gives partial praise when in the presence of the person one is speaking about and full praise when not in their presence.

2) The Gemorah Sanhedrin 108a points out that we see how bad theft is as mankind transgressed all forms of sin but Hashem only decrees the flood to mankind on account of theft. (Pasuk 6:13)

3) Question: Why does the Pasuk (7:8) use the longer and indirect term of “not-Tahor” instead of the word Tamey when referring to Tamey animals?

Answer: We learn from this that one should go at length to avoid improper speech. (Pesachim 3a)

4) The Gemorah in Sanhedrin (108b) says that the Raven told Noach that both Hashem and he hate him. Hashem hates him because only two of each Tamey specie was taken into the Teyvah as opposed to the 7 pairs of the Tahor species; and Noach hates him because he chose him to leave the Teyvah and had he not come back, there would only be one Raven left so they wouldn’t be able to regenerate.

5) Question: Of all things, why did the Dove bring back an olive branch in its mouth? (Pasuk 8:11)

Answer: The Gemorah Eruvin (18b) says that the Dove’s message to Noach was that it prefers to eat a bitter food that comes from Hashem rather than eat sweet food from man of flesh and blood.

6) [From the story of the Tower of Bavel] the Pasuk says “…and they sat there” (Pasuk 11:2).

The people of the Dor Haflagah sinned due to being satisfied as a similar phrase [but not exact phrase] of “and the nation sat…” is used when Klal Yisroel made the Eygel (golden calf). They first sat down to eat and drink. From there they proceeded to sin. (Sifri Parsha Eykev)
