Jason,
Bigelow gives the group presentation for the braid group. Can we
figure out what those relations have to do with the Reidemeister
moves?
For the moment, let's hold off on understanding what the mapping class
group is, and let's see if we can't still make sense of what is in
Section 3 of the paper.
