Hi Alex,
Great pictures!
As per my last post, we really could have labelled 6 points: the 3
crossings, plus the three places where the tangent to the knot is
vertical.
Is there a way to characterize these "critical points" as disks or
bands? Notice that the first vertical tangent is a band, and the last
two are disks.
Since the Euler characteristic of a sphere is 2, this would give us an
interesting formula relating certain kinds of points on a knot. What
is that formula?
