Hi, I am looking for some advice on doing an HDD to SDD upgrade.

I know a good amount about hardware and software, but since I haven't done an upgrade like this before, I just want to make sure I am not missing any detail(s) that would prevent this upgrade from working.

I have a 2013 Dell XPS 8700 running Win7 with two 1TB HDD in a Raid 1 (clone) configuration and I want to replace the 2x 1TB HDDs with 2x 2TB SSDs.

The device manager lists the RAID controller as a "intel(r) Desktop/Workstation/Server Express Chipset SATA RAID Controller) - but I don't know how to get the chipset model number yet.

So, these are the steps I was planning to do:
1) Take the 2x 1TB HDDs out of the computer
2) Using a desktop standalone disk duplicator device, clone one of the 1TB HDD to a "2TB" SSD
3) Install the Cloned 2TB SSD along with the blank/new 2TB SSD into the PC
4) Boot up the PC and do a Rebuild so the SSD's are synced
5) Run partition software to realign to 4k sectors
6) Run partition software to hopefully resize the SSD to its full 2TB capacity. (I'm ok if I won't be able to do this step)

Will the above procedure work to simply replace my HDD with SSD?

If not, what changes to those steps should I make?

Do I need to modify the BIOS in anyway?

My goal is to not have to do an OS-based backup/restore of the system.

Another goal is to not modify the raid controller settings in anyway so that if I can't get the SSD's to work properly, I can always simply re-install the original HDDs and at least I will be back up and running.

Getting a new device will most probably mean upgrading windows from my current version Win7, and that will probably introduce new incompatibilities with my apps/drivers, so I would like to not have to fix anything that is currently working.

Hmm ... you said you are RAID1 - mirrored? I would think you could just pop out one of the existing drives, pop in one SSD, and ask the array controller to recover. Then do the same on the other side after that operation is complete. You'd need to look at the docs for the RAID controller and see if it there is some explicit requirement for the drives to match (speed-wise, I guess). I'm assuming the SSD is the same interface technology (SATA/SAS) and capacity (or bigger) as the existing spinning disks. Am I wrong here?

It is crucial to save your files in the "My Documents" folder on a Windows computer, on the network drive folder (dfs/department drive/private/user) on a Macintosh computer or the Cloud instead of on your desktop or elsewhere on your local computer. Here's why:

@beenyweenies and @UKD thanks for the info. I have a few Synology devices on a 10Gbe switch for storage and backup. Not having seen an official Dropbox app, I didn't think to look at Synology's own app. I've been swamped with work lately and haven't had much time to experiment with this (and I really messed up when I did!)

I moved most of my production to Windows machines back in early 2000, when buying a new pro Intel Mac didn't seem like a good idea. (Arguably, Windows is never a good idea... but that's another story.) I'd been waiting for the second generation of Apple Silicon before making the switch back to Mac. Now I've got these new machines, but a lot of the workflow I'd established while on Windows is proving to be difficult. At this point I'm using VNC to access a windows machine running Dropbox, where I move files to and from the NAS, and use the context features of the app there to copy links and paste them into Slack back on the Mac. It's a royal pain. Before leaving for a long weekend here I'm hoping to install the older version of Dropbox on the new Macs using some new external tb4 ssds just to get some of the old functionality back. If all else fails I can still VNC to a Windows machine. It sounds like Synology's app understandably wouldn't have any of the context functionality, so I'd still find myself going to another source (the dropbox website?) to grab links. None of this is optimum.

@UKD Thanks for the info. Did/do you use the optional 10Gbe ethernet, or just bridge two 1Gb, etc? Sounds like it could actually work for my needs, just not sure if it's worth it given the cost of the device, drives, 10Gbe upgrade, SSD for cache, upgrading my network switch etc. This project is getting more expensive every time I look at it lol.
