Superoverlay is a stand-alone Google Earth application for tiling raster datasets and creating view based regions in KML or KMZ files. It helps you put large image overlays into Google Earth (for example alternative maps or aerial photography). Superoverlay automatically include georeferences from world files, change and optimise size and time of downloading images. Also Superoverlay can generate world files for all images in ArcView style (jgw, tfw,...).

The download link doesn't work.

Does it automatically read georeference information from GeoTIFF and/or JGW files?

Great, I'm definately interested in this. Couple other suggestions.

1) Add option to hide child network links.

2) If you support PNG output files, add option to adjust the color depth and compression of the output tiles to help with size of the tiles.

3) Add ability to adjust the MinLodPixels and MaxLodPixels for each level of tiles.

Thanks

I tried it tonight. Very easy and fast to use. Any chance you will make it work with NASA World Wind also??

I think there is something wrong with LodPixel values.

That should make the overlay visible at any zoom level greater than the Min value. But the overlays are not always displaying. Also, the tiles do not seem to display correctly when you pan and tilt.

See example attached.

in German we always say "N - S - E - W" so it's not intuitive to type into the mask "W - S - E - N"

Valery,

*Very Nice!*

However... Have you tested this using very large (200MB+) single input file?

I'm using Beta 1.1.0, build date 24.10.2006, on Win XP latest patches w/3 GB RAM), I am having problems.

>> I've tried this again using v1.2 with similar results. <<

When running with large TIF file, 223MB, I get an "Out Of Memory" error after the progress bar nears 20+%. Experimentation with other settings like LODs, etc. produce other error types like "A generic error occured in GDI+". None complete w/o error message of some sort.

Please let me know if I am doing more than the beta should be expected to do. Happy to help debug if you can direct me to the details you require.

Why doesn't it reduce the resolution of the images? Shouldn't all the levels be lower resolution than the original image?

For example, I used SuperOverlay on a a 6,000 x 8,000 pixel map. The 1st level generated by SuperOverlay was 6,000 x 8,000. The second level 3000 x 4,000, the 3rd level was 1,500 x 2000, the 4th level was 750 x 1,000 and the 5th level was 375 x 500.

But they should all be 375 x 500. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

Hi Matt, hi Valery,

I found out that on the second run all bigger images are reduced. On the first run I have the same result as Matt. I did not complain about because I prefer the reduction using IrfanView.

I tried experimenting and updated with most recent version.

Now I receive an error that says "File XYZ0.jpg is blocked by another process" when I convert using JPG or TIF after it creates all of the files. I don't have anything else running that might be using the file and I can delete it with Explorer while the error box is still up. If I do the exact same thing with PNG or GIF it does not give that error. But it still does not reduce the file sizes.

I also found that the problem seems to happen with using TIF/PRJ/TFW files for input. But JPG/PRJ/JGW as input file works fine and reduces the file sizes as it should. So maybe it's just a problem with TIFF.

Here is an example file that does not work.

http://www.fox-fam.com/gefiles/topos4/Camas16_1946.zip

Also, I also don't mind because I also use Irfanview to do the reduction. So if you fix the problem maybe leave an option to not reduce the file sizes for those of us that want to us another program for that.

Is there anyway to fix the out of memory problem that happens when I try to load too many maps at the same time?

If I have 20 or 30 maps to process, I can only do them in groups of 5-6 at a time because the application runs out of memory and won't add anymore to the batch.

Is it necessary to load the entire image into memory before it is time for it to be processed?? That seems to be the problem.

Thanks.

1. With Superoverlay Pro Scheduler you can use many of processes. You can distribute project by tasks.

2. Optimizations by memory, by speed of works with ftp etc connections we begin make in next time. Now we extend functions of this application. Next steps it is user-password functions, log file, additional events in Scheduler.

Also users write about good results with new ArcGIS and Explorer versions.

I have a suggestion for image output format that is optimized for transparency.

Can you add an option to output a mix of PNG and JPG with the following rules:

- Tiles that are 100% transparent color get skipped completely.
- Tiles that have 0% transparent color get saved as JPG
- Tiles that have >0% and <100% transparent color are saved as PNG with transparency.

This will help because PNG supports transparency but isn't lossy. JPG is lossy but doesn't support transparency. So a mix of the two formats will create the smallest possible SuperOverlay and still have transparency.

Thanks.

Actually, after doing some more experimenting, I found a way to have lossy compression AND transparency at the same time with 8-bit GIF files. That seems to do what I need. So nevermind

In case any others are interested, here are the file sizes for my little experiment.

Original JPG - 14.7 KB
Regular GIF - 28.5 KB
Lossy (80% quality) GIF with transparency- 12.8 KB
PNG (with PNGOut) - 25.4 KB

Version 1.5.4

New features:
- 'Convert to 8-bit PNG' is now available ('convert to 8 bit' algorithm is improved)
Speed of work with 8 bit images now very fast.
- 'Invert black to white' option is added (useful for inverting black background to white). You can set white color as transparency and black as white for best show of labels and grid.

Improved features:
- full import of Groundoverlay parameters by add KML ( KMZ ) - altitude, timer tags, transparency, georeference.

We adapt Superoverlay to works with standard topomaps, geological and other thematic maps. If your map have small count of colors then you can use:
- 8bit output (png)
- transparency white color for remove background
- "invert black to white" option for see labels and grid in white color.
Google Eart support transparency in PNG files. 8bit PNG files have small size and see as optimal solution for standards maps.

Thanks!
