Hi all, I expected to find other posts on this subject, but I couldn't.

I installed the latest version of sketchup and noticed to my horror that it does not support kml/kmz import anymore.

Is there another way to convert .kml to .skp? Or does anyone know where I can find the previous version of sketchup?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi
Did you see the Entrance page here?

Thanks for your reply.
I did see the entrance page, but I don't understand how that would help. Maybe I'll just have to learn how to edit the kml manually, but SU is so much easier.

Hi
No, you dont need. I dont know the very details of the SU issue but I guess you need to employ the Google Sketchup unleashed as a free version (or did you install that already?); follow the article in the Entrance Page (or you will make me install it for my first time to have the experience ). People are doing SU, you must have something skipped.

I should explain clearer.

I use SU (free) to model airspace control areas in GE for (glider) pilots. I would enter exact coordinates in GE and import those to SU. I also imported kmz files of country borders, because some control areas are bounded by those borders.

I recently updated SU, but the the latest version of SU (free) does not have the kml/kmz import option. I was very surprised by this, because I thought a lot of people used this option. I could use "Get Current View" to import images of the coordinates and borders to SU one by one, but I hope to find a better way.

btw. I have posted at the SU help group, but I did not get an answer.

Hi
You're right. It seems there is no kml to SU "anymore". Maybe it is the weekend being the reason you are not replied by any SU member. Personally, with my no-experience on SU, I couldnt find any way/clue for this, too.

Dont you have your former SU version saved in somewhere; I mean if you use Opera or Flashget or the like?

Sketchup has never had a KML import feature. SU imports a geo-referenced image that you can construct your building from, but any KML created in earth stays there.

This is a reasonable feature to ask for, but it hasn't been done yet.

Thanks for your reply, but that is incorrect. I have used kml import in Sketchup (free), so it was there in the previous version.

May you had installed a 3rd-party plugin?

No, that's not it, but thanks for trying to help.

I have found GPS Utility It should be able to convert .kml to .dxf, which can be imported by SU. I will try it when I have more time.

I also tried some. Blender can import a kmz with this plugin and save it, for instance, as 3D Studio file. That file is able to be opened by SU.

But may create problems in details; I am not sure. I didnt try it with textures, either.

'Google SketchUp' has a file in 'Importers' folder named "KMLImporterLibrary.dll". Weird.

Kass, why dont you find the plugin (or the right file) that imports kml and try to amend it to the new SU version? May work...

I'm curious as to the opposite of this scenario.
I have begun to model a city for my own purposes (commercial and otherwise).

I'd love to share the model for the public to view and explore, but would not do so if any Joe Schmo could import the file and take advantage of all my hard work. (Surveying the town, commissioning aerial photos, gathering and correcting elevation photos, modeling the town....)

This is a significant undertaking, and I'd love to share it - but not to the point of handing it over to my competition. So, before I do this, is there any way to protect my data? If not, is this in the plan to ever allow such protection?

Thanks

Hi,

As long as you dont post it to this forum and keep it in a secret url of your server, nobody will reach them.

Even you share, the copyright is yours since your date of posting is recorded. But this wont mean anybody cant do the same thing with a more comprehensive way.

As Tek says, when you publish in the Web, then it´s possible to be used by someone. So I suggest you to visit this site and register your model. Then you can share it with a legal background that protects your rights.
Someone could use it anyway, but would have to respond legally.
