As you have found - I dont think this is possible. With pure KML to
run in standalone Google earth etc.
that site you link does it via hte Google Earth API, which does allow
far more control. By embedding a Google Earth instance in a webpage.
the closest would be to do something in the Places tree, using a
normal description. Buts its not reliable as the user can easily loose
the right marker. Or not even have the places panel visible.
