Hi all, I have a problem with KMZ files and was directed here from
another google forum.
Here is my problem.
I want to put KMZ file containing models onto my website so my friends
can download them and admire my work. But i am finding that the
textures in the models are disappearing from the KMZ files when they
download them.
This is repeatable and is the case with any file I post.
Here is my workflow:

1. Get the area from GE into SketchUp and draw the model.
2. Import this into GE to check that it looks ok. If not do some more
editing until i am happy.
3. Update the properties with the models name and setup a couple of
views.
4. SaveAs from the temp places to somewhere on my HD
5. Check the KMZ file again in GE.
6. If all is OK then upload to my website.

Now when people click on the link to DL the KMZ file they have 2
options 'Open' and 'Save' if they use save all is ok and the file
downloads to their computer and they can open it in GE.
BUT if they choose 'Open' the file downloads and opens GE fine, but
the KMZ file has had all its textures striped from within it.

I have checked this by renaming the KMZ file as a ZIP file, and those
that have been downloaded with 'save' have all the textures in them,
but those downloaded with 'open' just have the model file in them and
a KML file, all the textures have gone somewhere.

What is going wrong, can anyone shed any light on this matter.

Hi cmharb,

So there are a few things you have to make sure of:

1) That 'Export texture maps' is enabled when you click the
'Options...' button in the COLLADA export dialog box.
2) That the textures are actually being packaged up in the KMZ file
along with the model.
3) That the textures are being referenced properly (i.e. relative
URLs) in either the model, or in the KML using ResourceMap

If you post a link to a sample KMZ file we can take a look.

Im not sure what you mean. I am using SketchUP to create the models, i
have no idea what COLLADA is.

When i have placed the model in Google Earth, i then saveas while it
is is in the temp places. If i then open the file using winzip to look
inside all the textures are there.

Here is a link to a file:

http://cid-6f10a774ad932d27.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/Public/Example%7C_for%7C_GE%7C_Forum/Greenfields%20-%20Skate%20Park.kmz

to recreate the error, close Google earth, click on the link, select
'OPEN' from teh pop up box, you will see that there are no textures on
the model.

Close Google Earth, click the link again, but this time select 'SAVE'
and save to your desktop or other place on your HD. Double click the
file to open it in Google Earth and the textures are all there.

For what is worth I can see your model equally well, with textures,
using either of the methods you suggested.
I am using
Google Earth
4.3.7284.3916 (beta)

I think you need to troubleshoot a little more at your end.

Hi cmharb,

COLLADA is the format used for Model geometries in KML. SketchUp
exports a KMZ file that contains the COLLADA .dae file somewhere in
the file structure.

Regarding your textures issue, I am also unable to reproduce it here.
It could be related to caching; clearing the cache might fix it on
your machine (Tools -> Options -> Cache -> Clear...)
