Here's a way to use GE to create waypoints and (optionally) routes for Garmin Mapsource v6.7 (latest downloadable)...

If you want Mapsource to create a route from the GE's 'Save As' KML file, then you MUST name your active GE Placemarks as
001
002
003
and Mapsource will create a route from 001 to 002 to 003.

This is NOT a KML to GPX translater, although that looks pretty easy to do. This program reads the KML file and then uses Windows functions to send keystrokes to the Mapsource program. No guarantees and no support, but it WORKS for me.

Instruction for using the program are included in the install set. To get the install set - go to my web site . At the bottom of the home page, click the link. If you have children between the ages of 6 and 16 - spend a little time on the web site. People who use the software I sell there LOVE IT! (yes this is a blatant commercial message!)

Enjoy the waypoints program - eventually GE will export gpx, until then, this works. Be aware that SOMETIMES a random single waypoint is added to the end of the route at the current mouse position . . . it's easy to identify and remove because the name is a latitude coordinate.

I use it to create scenic rural routes for motorcycle rides . . . set them up in GE, export to KML, open mapsource to a blank map, run the Waypoints program and download to my 76C . . . I can have a 100 point route on my GPS within a minute of finishing the design in GE.

Please let me know if it works for you and any suggestions you may have. send your comments to the 'Help@' link on the web page linked above.

Enjoy - David Hunt

MapSource 6.8.0 now imports GPX.

Convert KML to GPX with my free utility; see post "Free KML to GPX Converter (KML2GPX.exe)".
