I have a KML file that loads fine in Google Earth, but won't load in
My Maps. None of the placemarks appear on the map, and the map title
appears as "Unable to load..." However, the placemarks do appear in
the list to the left of the map.

The KML file is at http://bcf-ftp.com/espacePrive/BCF/SchoolsCoded2.kml.

I'd appreciate any help...is there a place to look for a more detailed
indication of why it isn't working other than "Unable to load..."?
Maybe an error log somewhere?

I have tried several methods of importing the file, both from a local
drive and a web location to no avail.

Thanks,

For what its worth I believe this is a bug on Google's part#. You file
look reasonable, and can even be displayed on Google Maps:

http://maps.google.com/?q=http://bcf-ftp.com/espacePrive/BCF/SchoolsCoded2.kml

You can even save this in 'My Maps' like this (using the link
provided)

In fact I would suggest this as the recommended way of displaying your
content,

unless you really need the editing (and/or collaboration) features of
google maps, then running it as a 'geofeed' (loaded live from your KML
file) you get better display methods (the display is dynamically
culled to prevent too much data showing (but shows more as you zoom
in), whereas with a editable My Map, very arbitary 'pages' are used)

- and you can always edit the KML file and quite soon (the kml is
cached) the edits will show up directly for everyone viewing your
content*, you can even use KML features not supported in editable my
maps.

# and has been reported quite a few times on the Google Maps help
group. (unfortunatly the import function seems jinxed)

* if you want the same benefit for Google Earth, then I suggest
wrapping it in a Network Link, so that GE users get a pointer to the
content rather than the content itself. See http://gokml.net/

Hi Doug,

Indeed, this is a bug. I've filed it and Google Engineers will look
into it.

I had the same problem and found that there was a problem with the
formatting with the KML file.

Basically GoogleEarth would read the KML file and display it without a
problem - but I just could not import it into MyMaps.

If you rename the KML file's extension to XML - you can then load it
into Internet Explorer as a XML file. At this point I could see that
after a certain point text wasnt being loaded into IE. I went and
cleaned out some of the lines and once I got IE to read the entire
file - I was able to import it into MyMaps.

ps: The offending character in my KML file was the ASCII code - 160
( ). I used TextPad to find and replace it.

The error IE reported was: An invalid character was found in text
content. Error processing resource 'file:///...<name>
