This is just a general KMZ question, nothing to do with development
but there doesn't seem to be a more appropriate folder. Let me know
if there is.

A couple months ago I created a kmz file "venues" with a dozen or so
related locations. I always saved it to my hard drive and then deleted
it from MyPlaces before closing GE. Next time I wanted to use it I
used File - Open, found it on my hard drive and opened it with no
problem. I also had several other KMZ files in the same directory.

Recently I got a new computer so prior to the switch I backed up the
KMZ directory, as well as the GE folder under Application Data, to a
network drive. Got the new computer, which was XP, not Win2000 like
the old one. Moved my KMZ directory back to the new hard drive as
well as the GE folder under Application Data.

But now, when I open the "venues" file there is no data in it. It
loads but there are no locations associated with it. The other kmz
files work fine! The major difference between them is that the other
kmz files only reference one specific location. As I mentioned, the
"venues" file references several locations.

Any ideas what happened and how to retrieve the data?

Thanks

Hi randomonia,

Could you post the venues kmz file somewhere so that we can check it
out? You can use the Files section of this group.

Hi,

Sorry to take so long to do this. I just uploaded the kmz file to the
files section - GD Venues.kmz

Thanks for any help!

Rando,
I don't know if there is a delay or approval process for files,
but I can't find your file.

There's generally not this long a wait. Rando, did you upload here?

I must've done something wrong before. It's up there now.

Thanks

randomonia,

Maybe I am doing something wrong, but I can't find it anywhere. I
sorted the files by date and the most recent file was posted Mar 2. I
also sorted by poster name and file name with no luck.

This is getting weird. I just checked and as you noticed, it wasn't
there though I am sure it was before. I also didn't see any posts more
recent than 3/2.

I just uploaded it again and then sorted the list of files by date.
Now I see 12 files, including mine, dating from 3/16 - 4/8. Yes, now
it's showing the file I uploaded on Tuesday! But not the one I just
uploaded or the one I uploaded earlier today. A few of the other
files are texturetest.kmz, innerouter.kml and roads without flicker
effects.png. Can you see those?

Anyway, I put the kmz file here: http://home.gwi.net/~mcleod/everything%20else/misc/

Let me know if you have problems accessing it from there.

Thanks again!

oooookaaay...

Just after posting my recent message I went to the Files upload
folder, hit refresh and my file and all the others posted since 3/2
disappeared. Before Refresh there were 220 files, after Refresh there
were 209 files. I'm fairly computer literate so I can't imagine I'm
doing anything wrong.

Well, hopefully you can access the file from the address I posted
above.

Hi Rando,

I'll look into the Files section, but in the meantime, as you suspect,
there is nothing in the file you uploaded. Or rather, there are a
bunch of Style elements and such, but no Placemarks.

I don't know what has happened. Unfortunately, there's no way to
recover your data from this file.

I don't know what happened, on either end. The only thing I can think
of is that your save accidentally saved an empty Document element.

Ok, thanks for checking it out. The only thing I can think of is that
I hit "Delete Contents" by accident. Regardless, I already started
recreating the file a couple days ago and I'll be more careful about
how I save it.
