I track cell usage as part of law enforcement investigations. I used
Microsoft Map Point, but can I do the same thing in Google Earth
using KML? The cell site locations are provided by the carriers in
Excel. I now use Linux and import the Excel files into OpenOffice,
but retain the .xls file format. What I want to be able to do is put
the cell sites I want to plot into Google Earth, then either print it,
or create a screen shot that can be input into a slide show
presentation for court. I downloaded a program called XLS2KLM, which
is an Excel sheet with a macro installed. Is what I want to do
possible in Linux with the tools I describe?

Hi philven,

What your asking is certainly possible in Google Earth, but you might
want to read the License terms first to make sure you would be in
compliance:
http://earth.google.com/intl/en-US/license.html

If you would be in compliance, you might want to check out Google
Earth Plus, which would allow you to import spreadsheets directly.

I don't know if OpenOffice allows macros, and I haven't seen any that
create

Now my next question is, how do I take the data from the spreadsheet
into Google Earth to show the map points? I'm new at this. I found
out about KML by accident so I haven't figured out make it work yet.

Hi Phil,

If you're using Google Earth Plus or Pro, you can simple open the file
from Google Earth. Once it is open, you can copy or save it out to
KML.
