I am developing a set of placemarks in Google Earth, which is saved as
a kmz file.

I have separate folders for each state of Australia, and can drag/drop
placemarks into different folders or positions in the list, but only
one-by-one, and only in places that are visible on screen.

I can open the file in notepad etc, but it is gobbledegook, or save as
kml and open it in Excel for manipulation. But I can'r get the kml
file back into a kmz.

I want to reorganise the file. How is that possible?

Thanks

this is not possible directly in google earth.

try one of these third part tool:

KML Placemark Sorter

KML Placemark Grouper

I don't want to only sort them though, other manipulations like
naming, range, tilt etc without having to go the properties of each
one also.

At the moment I have property, town and I think I want to name them
the other way round, and sort by the town name.

I can open in excel as a read only xml but it won't let me save back
to xml.

Hi mishahu,

I'm a little unclear on your question. Are you asking how to do the
reorganization, or how to put it back in the KMZ file?

KMZ files are zip files, plain zip no passwords or anything fancy,
with a .kmz file extension. So you can use any zip application to open
them or create new ones. My favorite is 7-Zip, because it gives lots
of options and is free, but you could use the Windows archive manager,
or WinZip, or any other tool.

Both really.

The project is to make placemarks for certain places in Australia. The
collection at the moment is about 1000, but will grow.

I have been creating placemarks in a folder (Australia) with
subfolders for the states, and within them for the capital cities.
I've already made about 600.

In the name of the placemarks I have <property>, <suburb or town>.

As I place them I have them at various altitudes, and some with non
true north bearing and not 0 tilt.

I would like to make changes across the set like grouping the towns
and suburbs, set a uniform view etc, without having to alter the
properties of each placemark individually, and reorder them without
having to drag drop each one.

As I said above, I can save as a kml, rename to xml, and edit in
excel. But excel won't let me save back to xml. And if I rename the
xml to kml I can't open it in GE.

I'm a very confused little bunny.

Hi mishahu,

Unfortunately, there's not really a tool for doing this, aside from
Earth itself. I assume you've tried just dragging and dropping your
placemarks to get them to the right folders?

you can try to convert directly from excel to kml,

with one of these tool:
