This may be obvious, and I'm surprised I haven't been able to find
this myself. But where can I browse all of Google's icons for hot
linking from KML styles?

When I edit a placemarks icon with the Google Earth icon I see a link
like http://maps.google.com/mapfiles/kml/pushpin/ylw-pushpin.png or
http://maps.google.com/mapfiles/kml/shapes/arrow.png. Is there a
Google website where I can see all of Google's official icons so I can
link to them from my kml files?

Google dont provide such a list online. But see this:
http://econym.org.uk/gmap/geicons.htm
for the old set.

Also have a look in
C:\Program Files\Google\Google Earth\client\res\shapes
(or similar path for your machine!)
for the local cache of the files, you can from that deduce the maps
url :)

and
C:\Program Files\Google\Google Earth\client\res\pushpin
even
C:\Program Files\Google\Google Earth\client\res\paddle

For the record I dont think you can 'officially' hotlink these in your
own files, but it works just fine...
