I see how one could export/extract Google Earth elevations along a
path, for example, to create a terrain profile along a convoy route --
but is there a similar automated way to have Google Earth display all
the elevations within a 2km x 2 km polygon? Or to export those
elevations (say, in a grid of 100m) to an Excel file? I ask because
I'm trying to apply 3D graphics elevations to a GE image I'm using as
a source map for a game. Right now, I have to just draw lines in GE
along each 100m row of my GE polygon, watch the elevation meter at the
bottom of the screen, and jot down the elevations as they change from
one end of my 2km x 2km area to the other. Very tedious!

Hi Gina,

Unfortunately batch export of terrain data would violate the Google
Earth EULA/Terms and Conditions.

There should be, however, third party terrain data sources-- if anyone
has any recommendations, please note them :-)

Thanks,
Roman

To start you on your search have a look at http://eros.usgs.gov/products/elevation/
I've used the SRTM data and found it be good both for US and
elsewhere. There are shareware applications that let you visualise the
data, reformat, extract etc.

It seems USGS has changed the links on its site. I found this link
directly to the mapping applet:
http://seamless.usgs.gov/website/seamless/viewer.htm?startbottom=-85.0&starttop=85.0&startleft=-179.5&startright=179.5&limitbottom=-85.0&limittop=85.0&limitleft=-179.5&limitright=179.5

In the left toolpane there is a 'Elevation Profile' query tool, which
will generate an image of an elevation cross-section along the
selected polyline path. No numerical output option that I have seen,
but this looks useful for small projects, such as Gina described.
