I have a timeline showing Temperature changes at a number of polygons. However, the Placemark <name> is persistent across the timeline with the result that by the end of the timeline all temperature values are being shown on the polygon.

You mix timestamp and timespan. Remove the timestamp (no time limit) and use only timespan (begin and end).
