I've been trying to recover a broken myplaces kml, since i strangely
lost all my places after a google earth upgrade. I've read dozens of
threads and spent hours editing the file in notepad++, but could not
fix it. It's quite a large file.
The error is:

Parse error in line 1018740 (yes, a million), column 159346:
not well-formed (invalid token)

Please help.

Greetings:

You should have a myplaces.backup.kml someplace on your drive. Its in
your user directory, Library:Application Support:Google Earth on a
Mac.

I have used BBEdit (Mac program) to edit these files. You need a
powerful raw text editor to open and work in ones of these sizes.

Check out some of steps outlined in this discussion thread:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/earth/thread?tid=3994c32401243da1&hl=en

I would divide and conquer by commenting out the Folder before and
after the problem line # and see if that works then go back and fix
other parts.

Note that having such a large places file takes a long time to load
when you start Google Earth and save whenever a change is made.
In future suggest you export the larger and lesser used KML pieces as
KMZ files and access them as needed but don't save them to your saved
places.
