I have a large kml collection and I'd like to have it available on a
website for search results via query, but I'm not sure how to get the
data from the .kml file into Excel. Is there an easy way to do this?
I want all the data searchable by placename, gps coordinates and
description.

thanks

As KML is actully just XML, Excel can open it directly. Just type
"*.kml" in the filename in the Open File Dialog, find and open your
file(s).

I guess then once in KML you will copy/paste it into one document, and
convert it into some form of CSV for feeding into your search system.

Excellent and so easy.... I was actually trying to open the .kmz file
which posed the problem. Now I see it's possible to open the file
with a winzip type program.

Awesome!

Thank so much!

I tried opening the KML file in Excel, but I always have errors when
opening the KML file. If I choose from the three selections to open
the file (As an XML list, Read-Only Workbook, or as an XML Source task
pane), Excel doesn't import any of the data in the KML file. Am I
opening up the file incorrectly, or should I convert the KML file to
another format to view in Excel?

Make sure what you are trying to open is in fact .kml and not .kmz.  If it is .kmz, then change the .kmz extension to .zip and unzip the file.  You will see a .kml file in the zipped folder.

I usually change the .kml extension to .txt and open it that way.  You could try changing that suffix to .csv as well and see if that works.
