Hi,

There might be a loss of Physical connection or error in formatting
the hard disk's physical partitions. Check for it.

If you dont want to loss data or fresh new installation of Fedora then

Resize the root or /home partition using the utils GParted or alike.

Use the free space for the XP on installation..

Boot the system with a Live CD, (Ubuntu or Gparted Live CD). Ubuntu will
be quite ok.
Open gparted using the the menu System->Administrator->Partion Editor,

With gparted you can play around resizing the partions
this link,
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/larry/resize/resizing.htm
may help you.
