root login in fedora

Hi buddies I am using ubuntu 8.10 and fedora.. In ubuntu i can easily
login as root but in my fedora i had tried two things howewer i can't
login as root.
that things are..
1) I changed that /etc/pam.d/gdm file by removing the line user ! =
root (Second line) and saved the file

2) While booting changed the password in console via adding 1 at the
end of the grub line (editing the grub) but till i can't login as
root...
