I have been trying to setup Bonjour Print Services on Server 2012 so that iPad users can print to non AirPrint enabled printers using the following tutorial -ios-airprint-support-on-windows/ Opens a new window

Bonjour is Apple's implementation of zero-configuration networking (zeroconf), a group of technologies that includes service discovery, address assignment, and hostname resolution. Bonjour locates devices such as printers, other computers, and the services that those devices offer on a local network using multicast Domain Name System (mDNS) service records.

Bonjour provides a general method to discover services on a local area network. The software is widely used throughout macOS, and allows users to set up a network without any configuration. As of 2010[update] it is used to find printers and file-sharing servers.

Installers on Windows systems normally place Bonjour files in a folder called "Bonjour" within the "Program Files" folder. It modifies Windows system-registry entries related to internal network configuration and operation. Bonjour runs as mDNSResponder.exe. Communications across the network take place over UDP port 5353, which may require reconfiguring some personal or corporate firewalls that block Bonjour packets. A full installation of Bonjour for Windows will include a plug-in for Internet Explorer, a printer wizard, and the network communication services. Not all components are included when installed as part of a third-party application or as a component of other Apple software such as iTunes.

Don't let the French confuse you. Bonjour is both a product and service used to discover devices such as printers and the services the devices offer on a local area network using mDNS (Multicast Domain Name Service) service records. The software allows users to set up a network without configurations. For all the connectivity products, Bonjour is thoughtfully developed with customers in mind.

mediamad, are you using windows firewall or some third party firewall like norton? the bonjour installer automatically creates rules for windows firewall and I guess you need to add them manually in case you use something else

You need to open port 5353 UDP

Bonjour supports the discovery of Apple network services (such as file sharing), device sharing (such as network printers attached to a Mac), and network configuration (to set up a network with other Apple devices properly).

Apple has made part of Bonjour (mDNSresponder.exe) open-source, so you may be able to find support for it integrated into other third-party apps, hardware, and services. This is why support for Bonjour has been integrated into products like printers on a wider basis in recent years.

Once fully implemented, it adds Zeroconf to Internet Explorer and allows interactions between hybrid OS devices. It offers a plugin for Internet Explorer, printer wizards and network communication services.

I had a similar issue setting up a raspberry pi as a print server for an old hp printer. The solution was to add the printer locally to the windows machine first, then reconnect it to the pi and connect over the network from the windows machine. This worked for me but YMMV.

The Bonjour program was created by Apple as a zero-configuration networking tool. It allows its users to discover devices services and computers on an IP network without a high degree of pre-configuration. The networking protocol was created by Apple and they also added an IE plugin and a printer wizard. The two features are able to discover their counterparts without you having to configure your DNS servers or IP addresses.

3) allow the following programs access under the rule:
a) printer specific software (in my case it was brother admin professional stuff... about three or four apps)
b) bounjour service
c) bonjour printer wizard (had to manually add this through 'browse')
d) spooler subsystem app (had to manually add this through 'browse')
