While you could never straightforwardly clear the default browser setting on Android, on Android 10 you could go to app info for any browser and "clear defaults". On A11 Google hid that button much deeper into settings (apps -> default apps -> opening links -> [browser]) but still worked at least. On A12, it's still there, only that Chrome is not on that "opening links" app list.
You can try setting any other browser as default, then go to that "opening links" setting for that browser and clear defaults, but then instead of "none" for default browser, Chrome will be set (like the link above indicates for A12 beta).
But it looks horrible in the Android 4 default browser. And what's worse, I can't do anything about it:
I can't debug on the android device, I can't install a USB driver for remote debugging (I have no admin rights on the corporate laptop), doing anything in the android emulator is impractical because it is far too slow, and the fact that it doesn't take input from the computer keyboard, which means I have to use the mouse and type each character separately with the mouse on this horrible keyboard is just the tip of the iceberg.
Every version of Android has a "android browser" that uses a cut of the WebKit rendering engine. Also, the Android Browser that lives in the AOSP v4.4 (kitkat) is based on the same code as Chromium v30.0.0. Applications that use WebViews use this Android Browser (not the user's default browser).
I think you are limited in your options for debugging (or I haven't found a great solution). The best I've found is looking at the page in your browser on your device/emulator and in Chrome/browser of your choice at the same time, and make educated guesses about what is different and why, manipulate things, refresh, start over.
First, download the Chrome app from the App Store, then tap Settings > Chrome > Default browser app and select Chrome to set it as your default browser. You'll need iOS 14 or later to set Chrome as your default browser on an iPhone.
On your Windows 10 PC go to the Start menu and select Settings, then click System > Default Apps. Under Web Browser, select your current default browser (likely Microsoft Edge), then, in the Choose an App window, click Google Chrome.
On your Mac, open Chrome and select More (three dots) > Settings. Select the Default Browser tab, then click Make Default. If you don't see the Make Default option, Chrome is already your default browser.
In Windows 8, 7, and earlier, go to the Start menu > Control Panel, then click Programs > Default Programs > Set Your Default Programs. From the menu on the left, select Google Chrome, then click Set this program as default > OK.
I downloaded the app through my company portal and immediately upon opening the app I received the message "The SAP Concur Mobile app was not able to detect a default browser on this device. Please make sure to seta a default browser in order to use the app." I have checked on my mobile device and a default browser is selected. Not only is one selected, there is only one browser available on my device, so the default is the only browser available. The only option is to click "ok" with this notification and the app closes. I cannot get past this point. It wil not allow me to log in. How do I resolve this issue?
I have an Android phone with a "personal" and "work" profile. I got the same error message after I installed the app while in the work profile. I then installed Chrome while in the work profile (even though it was already installed in the personal profile and was set as the default browser), and didn't see the error after that.
"they'll need to reach out to their IT team so they can assist. As the user downloads the app through the company portal, this means that they use some type of MDM (mobile device management), so the IT team needs to investigate why the use receives that error when downloading the app they provide through the MDM. If they download from the App Store or Play Store directly, they wouldn't receive that error if they have a default browser set up, so the IT team/MDM provider are responsible for investigating the error"
Could you get a little more information from the internal team? I am the IT for my company and we are getting this, when we download the app from the play store as well and not our MDM. We have tried to change the default browsers. Downloading different browsers and setting them as default.
@amarquart do you know if the user having the issue has set a default browser on their mobile device? If yes, please ask them what the default browser is. If not, have them set Chrome as the default.
It would be great to be able to choose in which browser links from Asana should be opened. As you know, iOS does not allow choosing default browser. Outlook app does this - you can choose to open links in Chrome. Same would be great in Asana because many of us use that as main task management system and opening links in Safari is very annyoing.
Before I get overloaded with comment: YES I HAVE CLEARED THE DEFAULT FOR THE STOCK BROWSER THEN TRIED CLICKING ON A LINK. And: NO it has not asked me what browser I want to use. IT just opens in stock.
What worked for me was going into Settings/Apps/Choose default apps and then setting the Browser app to a different browser. In my case, I changed it to Chrome. I then reloaded the link from the message in-game to the E&P website on Chrome and collect the gems without issue.
My store uses the MINIMOG, when I use Chrome/firefox/edge/safari the mobile web is fine. But when I use the default browser of Android, the mobile web becomes weird. Even I can't change the option if I want to place an order in my store. Does anyone have this problem? I asked the minimog team for help, but there said they need weeks to figure out the problem.
Look for the .desktop file of your preferred browser in /usr/share/applications and copy it to /.local/share/applications/open-url.desktop. Look into this new file for the Exec tag. Make sure that this exec ends with an %U otherwise the browser will not open the url.
To let the original browser the standard browser again, remove open-url.desktop again. You may have two icons for your new default browser now. Ah, if you have some well-known browser installed via flatpak: This desktop file is also in /.local/share/applications`
I had just the same issue in using Firefox app as default browser. For me it was neccecary that another android app opens Firefox with a link. I created following file: /.local/share/applications/open-url.desktop
Speaking of changing the default search engine, if you want to change the default search engine for the Edge browser, here are the steps to follow. Remember, you can also set Chrome as your default browser on Windows. If you want to do that, follow these steps. There are more topics you can read about, and you can find them by using the search bar at the top right.
Being a WebView-based browser, however, means it needs to be coupled with an always up to date engine.
All of my ROMs, including /e/OS, use Mulch WebView (updated reguarly) making for a trustworthy (IMO) combo.
I would be all for that combo being the default with the requirement being that the WebView could be updated as available instead of waiting for the next ROM update.
Still think the FFUpdater thing would be better.
Going directly to the site for Privacy Browser would provide additional context that the developers are going to create a privacy fork of WebView to hopefully mitigate the issues you are describing for the next major version release. They also seem to have a much smaller code footprint than other browsers which makes auditing the code with smaller teams more possible.
Making Chrome your default browser will generally have the same navigation pathway regardless of the device you are using. Navigate to Settings--> Default apps, and under Browsers, select Chrome.
You can let Chrome open all web pages without the system asking you which browser you prefer, no matter which version of Windows you use. Check out our specified guides for Windows 10 and 11 for any other desired default browser changes.
On your computer, click the Start menu in the bottom left corner, represented by the four-square windows icon. From there, click Settings. Open your Default apps. At the bottom, under Web browser, click your current browser.
To open Chrome later, you can add a shortcut to your taskbar. First, open the web browser, then in the Windows taskbar at the bottom, right-click on the Chrome icon, and click Pin to taskbar.
On the next page, either search for or click on Google Chrome. Then click the current setting under each file type or link type you want to change. For the best Chrome experience on Windows 11, make default Chrome for any of the following file types: .html, .html, .shtml, .xhtml, HTTP, and HTTPS.
If all else fails, you can try setting Chrome as the default browser within the application settings. This method will usually direct you to your system settings to continue the abovementioned processes, but it can be good for troubleshooting if you have any problems.
