Every time I open a new document in the pdf x-change viewer, it gets opened in the same window. I want to place different documents on different places on the screen (independently of each other, not just tiling the window for side-by-side view), but cannot do it. Even going to the start menu and starting the reader again doesn't open a new instance of the application. Can I force the program to open a new instance or a new independent window?
If this is impossible, which other free reader does what I need and also lets me make changes to the file? I don't need to edit the text itself, but I want to be able to add comments, underline and highlight text, and add some graphic elements (e.g. a circle or a freehand line).
We have tested this on Windows 7, and found that if you leave checked marked "Tabbed Documents" and "Show Close Button for each Tab". PDF Xchange Viewer Version 2.5 (Build199) it will still open each document in a Tabbed window. You have to un-check "Show Close Button for each Tab" and " Tabbed Document". This will allow you to open multiple windows.
I downloaded the Firefox plugin - beautiful! Then I foolishly started fiddling with the menus and options
within the FF viewer. I'm not sure how it happened but I
lost all the menu bars from inside the browser viewer. For
example, I can't save a file because I don't have the menu
bars or icons with which to do it.I uninstalled and reinstalled and the menu options from the
plugin within FF are gone and I can't get them back.I do have the menu options in the freestanding program but
not the one that opens from within FF. It seems I need to
replace the plugin but I've no idea how to do that.Help? Suggestions?Louise
I also lost the options tab at the bottom - that was the
beginning of the end.....I tried f11 and that opened up the FF window rather
completely but didn't give me any more options within the
window.Reset all settings seems to effect the standalone but it
doesn't seem to effect the plug in.The stand alone is fine. It's the FF plug in where
everything got wiped out. The same applies when I go to use
it in IE. Apparently both plug
ins were messed up. I can use it but I've lost a lot of its
best functionality.I can edit the registry - but I don't know what or where and
don't want to make more of a mess.LouiseLouise
"It's not about carelessness or anything, just that the
menus can be hidden (or shown) using the F8, F9 and F11 keys
- you might have tried to use one of these for a FireFox
function, but when our plugin is active it will "grab" this
key and execute the command - which is to hide some (F8
Toolbars, F9 Main menu) or all (F11) menus. In order to restore the menus, make sure you have a PDF
document opened in FireFox, then scroll a bit through it (to
ensure the focus is on the plugin), and then use the
function keys.
You could also try to use Edit -> Reset all settings to
default, once you see the main menu to restore the plugin to
it's factory settings.
Please note that the Viewer and the plugin could have
separate settings, as well as custom shortcut keys assigned :)"Louise
I did see Sumatra as a good alternative. It's good to know that someone I trust uses it. I don't have great confidence in using a disconnected or unsupported piece of software anymore. Trackers new software is much more than I need. Along with the limited maintenance period of updates, without registering it. Trackers viewer has been good to me, but I think I'll give Sumatra a try.
You can also set the browser to be the default app for opening your saved PDFs, which they can do offline too.
If you do that then no neeed for a seperate PDF viewer and so one less app to have installed.
For saved PDFs I tend to just use Adobe Reader DC.
Yes it can be a bit OTT just for viewing the odd PDF, but it does the job and I've never got round to evaluating the alternatives.
Perhaps if I viewed PDF's more often I'd spend the time to look at few different reader apps.
I just discovered a few days ago that browsers can open PDF'S. At this time, I just read PDF'S and don't do any creating or editing. Using a browser is definitely something to consider as a read only app.
What's the update process like? Meaning is it downloaded and updated or is it done manually by visiting the site and downloading then installing. My friend is not tech Savey at all, and this would matter to her.
