Dearest cousin, Shlomit,

Thank you for your beautiful email about your dear father, my dear uncle.  I am so glad I came to St. Louis from Oregon for Uncle Irv's funeral.  He was very special to me, too...and I grew up with him.  He used to take me to the baseball games to see the St. Louis Cardinals.  I knew that that would be last time I would see your father.  He buried his last sibling and had finished his work in the States.

i hope some day our paths will cross either in Israel or in the States.  Meanwhile, let's never forget that we are family and we come from a long line of incredible people.  I hope we are making them proud and I know they would be so happy to know we have reached out to one another.

Your cousin,

Susi

To my dear cousins in the US,

Thanks a lot for the nice and touching words you have written about my father Zvi Zatzl. I was deeply moved realizing how much he was important and significant for you and how many memories you have from him. I really feel that he was a special, wise, warm, and loving person. my family and I miss him a lot.

At this moment I want to tell you how important and significant you all were for him. Making ALIYA and immigrating to Israel on 1959 was not a simple move. The difference between Israel and America then was huge. My father was always determined and happy with this decision as he was about the Jewish way he chose. However, at the same time he felt that he had left his family far away. Frequent visits to the US in the 1960s was practically impossible for my parents and sitting SHIVAH on his parents here in Israel was unbelievably difficult. Then, when flying became affordable, he felt obligated to join his siblings, their spouses,  and their kids during happy and less happy occasions. Not long ago he made it for Irv’s funeral knowing that this is the last visit.

Personally, 17 years ago, traveling back home after two years in California, Zohar, me and three of our kids (Shaked was born later) stopped for a weekend in Saint Louis with Ed and Nataly. It was very important for me to see the place where my father grew up and specially moving to visited the graves of our grandmother and grandfather (whom I am called after). Also, we had the opportunity to meet with Min, Irv, Linda, and her family who took us to the zoo. A year before that we visited Ken and his family in his house in Palm Springs and went hiking with them in Joshua Tree National Park. Good memories.

These opportunities were very important for us and made me feel that we must maintain family relations. It is relatively easy with Ed’s kids who frequently come to Israel and obviously with Amy who is an organic part of our family, but it is a bit more complicated with the rest of you. So, this moment is an opportunity to express my feelings and obligation for next generations.

Hope to meet with you in happy occasions.

Yours, Shlomit.

My dear cousin,

I returned home from celebrating Chanukah with my family to find this beautiful video tribute to Uncle Zvi.  It is an incredible gift that you shared with us.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

We know how very special your father was to all of your family.  But, do you know how special he was to us?  We had the privilege of watching him become a rabbi, move to Israel, meeting and marrying your mother...and becoming a man beloved by all...especially his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  I know my mother was so very proud of her little brother as were his other siblings. Uncle Zvi's memory is indeed a blessing to all of us.

Please give my love to all of my Israeli family.  Again, thank you for sharing these wonderful memories.

Susi

Rachel, what a blessing to have you share this video with us all. Memories flow thru me from the very first pictures when I was a little curly blond sitting at the top of the picture to the beautiful wedding pictures of your parents - I was there and remember so much.

Like Bill, I don't understand the Hebrew; however the smile on your Aba's face when he teaches is so sincere and you can see how much he loved teaching. What fortunate students he had.

And your mother always had a smile when they were together. Especially in those incredible photos of your family.

I've though about you all today and the tremendous loss you suffered a year ago.

Sending love and hugs to the entire Israeli family.

Dear Rachel,

Thank you so much for sharing this lovely tribute! Although I don't speak or read Hebrew (well, I faked it at my bar mitzvah!) and am missing some of the details, that doesn't really matter. This loving video brought tears to my eyes.

Love to my distant family and everyone who was touched by my Uncle Zvi.

Bill
