HI Everyone,
The East Cascades Audubon Society in Bend has been sponsoring monthly winter raptor surveys for nearly 20 years now, last winter we had 550 routes surveyed by 450+ volunteers throughout all of OR, WA, ID, the northern parts of CA and UT, and western MT, more than 32,000 miles of transects can be covered each month.
Some of you have participated, still are participating, or probably know someone who has done surveys in the past. As many of you know, the Klamath Basin hosts LOTS of raptors during the winter :). As coordinator of this project, I would like to let you know that I have a few route vacancies that need a volunteer to conduct surveys this winter. I ask that you commit to one survey each month for December, January and February and these surveys can be done to match up with your own monthly life schedules and hopefully skirt bad weather situations. Optional surveys can also be done during November and March.
Here are the routes needing help this winter:
Malin (48 miles)
Tulelake East (74 miles)
Tulelake West (74 miles)
All three routes have produced large numbers of birds of a wide variety of species and are critical in terms of us understanding the whole winter raptor population picture in the Basin. If you are interested in taking one or more of these routes, please email me and I can provide lots more information about them and how you would go about conducting these surveys. My goal is to insure all routes are filled by the end of this month, preferably earlier, so if this sounds like something you would like to do this winter, please contact me as soon as possible. If I get requests from multiple people for a particular route, I will have to fill them on a first come first served basis so please get back to me as soon as you can if you wish to take on a particular route :). I can almost guarantee that you will enjoy this effort and experience, looking forward to hearing from you soon, thank you :)
