Are you saying ravens could wipe out a rookery of this size overnight? And I have observed egrets and herons defending their nests from raven's and hawks several times.

Good job on this, Kevin.  Seems like you've got it right.   Could be more than just a couple [2] ravens since, as you said, they learn fast.     And I believe if an involved raven survives to ...more

One last comment.   You can tell if a broken egg has hatched or been predated by looking at the membrane lining the inside of the egg.  If the membrane remains attached to the pieces of egg shell, ...more

Mary,
I mentioned wondering about that.
I think I've moved away from the reason being a lack of food. I've since heard from at least two here on the list, after I posted my observations yesterday, that the refuge is suggesting it was the result of a wind event.  If so, then the eggs were likely exposed and were predated upon, likely by ravens, that were acting in a scavenger manner and not in a predatory way. Or, if the winds were so destructive, eggs fell, and were found my mammals. (but they did not appear to be entire egg parts close by on the ground, but rather scattered under the canopy, and so I think eggs were consumed by an avian predator, or scavenger). Or, both.

In any case, it appears that the rookery had a somewhat catastrophic event, such as wind. It remains to be seen if they will attempt to nest again. It was very windy down there yesterday.

Thanks.

Oh I would agree that ravens and hawks probably had a field day feeding on eggs and babies exposed by what I feel sure had to have been a catastrophic wind or thunder storm as Jack reports weather maps show there was a serious disturbance there during that time.  I have been visiting the rookery 3-4 times a week since they first started nesting and the rookery was healthy and growing in size until last Wednesday when I saw them last . Others said they were fine Saturday. I also have seen hardly any ravens this year  at LKNWR. Last year there were hundreds of ravens hanging out in that area and I do think they have been seriously affected by the drought, much more so than the egrets. Last year, yes I agree, they could have seriously affected even a large rookery such as this one. Just my thoughts...I wasn't there last weekend, so I don't really know.
