I received a message Sunday night from Pam Shannon, who said she and her husband had seen a pair of grebes with 3 babies near Putnam's Point.

I located them this morning. The 3 young are much older than what I expected.
There were many trips bringing fish in for the youngsters.

Most of the grebes were at long range. Enclosed pic was about 250 yards or more offshore.
Light conditions are very poor.

I will go back and see if I can find any more pairs with babies. I should say I missed my prediction
that there would be NO babies here this year.

I spent another 2 plus hours looking for more babies. Did spot another pair of Western grebes with two babies, as far as I could tell, and quite small.
This was also offshore from Putnam's Park, and also on the South side of most of the grebes. Most of the grebes to the North were farther out and just out of bino range.

140 West to the bottom of Doak mtn. was negative. Only a few grebes within bino. range.

I was out this morning on the Link River Trail and saw a pair of Clark’s Grebes with one baby just off shore next to the worn down photo blind on the Putnam’s Point end of the river. It was being fed by one of the pair when I saw it while riding on the back of the other. I also checked out Putnam’s Point but most birds were far enough that I don’t think I would’ve seen babies without a scope.

Super cool to see the one though, I had been hoping to see baby grebes since I started birding and this was the first time I’ve spotted one.

An update about baby grebes.
Reliable sources found a third grebe family, below the bridge by Putnam's that we believe IS a THIRD family.

They also found one close to the boat docks on 140 West, at the base of Doak Mtn.

I  plan  to stop scouting, and try to get some photos if I can get in decent range.
Hopefully the grebe families will continue to arrive.

Elijah,

Glad you saw your first Family Of Clark's, and hopefully you will see many more families of Clarks and Western grebes in the next couple months.
If you have the time to watch these families you will see lots of very interesting things they do.

Howard
