Birds Need your Help!

Most of you are aware that for the last two years Lower Klamath and Tule Lake National Waterfowl Refuges have experienced extreme drought and devastating disease. Being last in line for any water, the refuges have dried up to dangerously low levels. Low water levels have produced avian botulism outbreaks among waterfowl and shorebirds. Last summer it is estimated that 60,000 birds died of the disease.

This summer’s outbreak may very well be worse as migrating birds are more concentrated into areas with little water. Our Audubon chapter has supported the efforts of Bird Ally X, a non-profit organization of wildlife caregivers dedicated to rehabilitation, education, and advocacy. For the last four years Bird Ally X has managed the avian botulism response on the refuges. The Duck Hospital, located on Lower Klamath Refuge, treated over 3,000 birds last year. Of the birds that survived the first 24 hours, over 80% survived and were released.

Bird Ally X and their Duck Hospital are awaiting an onslaught of sick birds this summer. The Klamath Basin Audubon Society has donated $2500 to help buy needed supplies, but much more is needed. Volunteers are also needed to help their efforts. Please help with your tax-deductible donation. Send checks to:
