If someone asks me to come over to his house and teach him or his kids
something about computers, I usually tell him he has to invite me to
dinner afterward. I could get money for that!?

hmmm... tapi saya lapar lah! ... :)

Hi,

Haiz.. this one almost get me hesitated to bill my client.
One very good client of mine always ask me to meet him at his house.
After the discussion session, he always invite me to have lunch with him
And his wife very kind and provide breakfast.

I am not really teach the kids because of money. I ask the parents for
one session
first. It the kids think i am good then i will continue..

It's better if 1 or 2 sessions just to bring these kids as ur own
apprentice :)

Don't stop with using Linux or Open Source only, introduce programming
too, I'm sure
there are a lot of examples can be taken.

For example, I once introduced my ex boss kids with Hackety Hack (
programming in Ruby,
it's dead project now since _why cannot be detected).

just my Rm0.02 :)

best approach is, show them the 'fun' that you can get from opensource apps.. this includes opensource game such as Frets on Fire, yg Alien tu ka... then photo editing using gimp, 3d modelling guna blender.. office work guna openoffice.. any movie2 editing ka, make it fun to learn and explore.. create first website using opensource tools off course, which kids ndak minat mau ada website sendiri, kan.. :D

just teach anything that could tackle their interest la, conform after that they'll ask for more and the topic will be more specific..

(i know this is off topic already.. :D)

My take is, teach them for free. It will be a rewarding experience
itself.
