Despite earthquakes in Christchurch we still managed our first “beyond Auckland” FLL tournament last year which has paved the way forwards with several new regions starting in 2011. Many thanks to Jill Pears and the Christchurch FLL teams that, despite tough times, still managed a fantastic FLL tournament last year. Those that didn’t make it, and for exceptionally valid reasons I would add, will be fired up for the 2011 challenge no doubt!
The countdown to FIRST LEGO League Food Factor challenge release has begun! Now is the time to get your teams together and start thinking about this year’s topic.
Can FIRST ® LEGO® League Teams Improve Our Food?
In the 2011 Food Factor Challenge, over 200,000 9-16* year olds from over 55 countries will explore the topic of food safety and examine the possible points of contamination our food encounters – from exposure to insects and creatures, to unsterile processing and transportation, to unsanitary preparation and storage – then find ways to prevent or combat these contaminates.

New Zealand FLL Team registration is open now, visit http://kiwifirst.org for details. There are regional tournaments in Auckland North, Auckland South, Wellington, Christchurch and Otago followed by the New Zealand Championship tournament with around 40-50% of teams receiving invitations to compete.
We’re also adding another regular FLL event to the calendar, the mini-challenge. This was successfully piloted in Auckland during July and gives teams a chance to try the FLL robot game (previous year) before committing to entering the full FLL challenge.
Starting 2012 in conjunction with the mid-year FLL mini-challenge Kiwi FIRST are pleased to announce Junior FIRST LEGO League will also be available in New Zealand. More details soon.

Last of all I’ll leave you with a movie clip from the FIRST Championship in St Louis MO USA earlier this year, will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas couldn’t make FIRST cooler since it’s already cool but certainly managed louder! Sorry but we won’t have this at the NZ Championship.
