Hi all,

My apologies in advance if this issue has been tackled before, it’s been a long time since I used “kiwi”.

Back in the days is used kiwi to create USB-bootable systems on a SuSE machine, yielding sles and openSuSe appliances.

Now I have to produce bootable Ubuntu and/or Debian machines.

Googling for examples and experiences, I only found some stories how to install “kiwi” onto an Ubuntu machine, (and manual-references to deb-bootstrap) but none of someone ever using it. (but lots of SuSe users),.

Before refreshing outdated kiwi-skills, and diving into uncharted wildlands:

Is it possible using KIWI to produce bootable Ubuntu images at all? Or should I forget about it?

(If it is essential to use KIWI from a Ubuntu/Debian system so be it…)

Met vriendelijke groet,

Welcome back :)

Easiest way to get started is always by looking at the integration
test builds. You can find those here:

https://github.com/OSInside/kiwi/tree/main/build-tests/x86/debian
https://github.com/OSInside/kiwi/tree/main/build-tests/x86/ubuntu

Also other archs can be found there. The respective build in OBS can
be found here:

https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/Virtualization:Appliances:Images:Testing_x86:debian
https://build.opensuse.org/project/show/Virtualization:Appliances:Images:Testing_x86:ubuntu

Yes possible and supported. Please also see our support matrix:

https://osinside.github.io/kiwi/overview.html#system-requirements

It's always easiest if the build host distro matches with the target
image you want to build, but it's not strictly required. For isolated
building in either a VM or a container we offer the kiwi boxed plugin.
You can find more information about this here:

https://osinside.github.io/kiwi/plugins/self_contained.html

If I build locally for e.g Debian I make use of it because my machine
is based on Leap and doesn't offer the debian tools (apt and friends)

Hope this helps

Best regards,
Marcus
