A side-scroller has two kinds of elements:
Those that scroll with the environment or move relative to it and those that do not.  The player character usually moves freely and the scene-relative elements all will be watching one kivy property representing the origin for that coordinate set.

If you want efficiency, you need to remove graphics elements that are no longer able to be visible.  This depends on your logic for how they move relative to the scene.

For elements that use a texture that just repeats, you likely want to display fixed Image()'s and manipulate their texture coordinates and set their repeat mode.

In synopsis, you should play around and become familiar with the following API calls (probably a lot more) 
Rectangle()
Image()
bind()

Have you looked at the contest page? A few of the games were side scrollers.
