zbarcam or other qrcode alternatives

I've been having a time trying to get pyzbar and zbarcam from kivy garden working on my set up. has anyone actually seen it work lately?

and are there any alternatives at all? I'm close to actually getting a working prototype but need a way to read qr codes.

pyzbar works for me, I don't use zbarcam but that is I think just xcamera based and that usually seems to work fairly easily.

There are usually alternatives, I think I saw a tflite based one. But pyzbar is going to be waaaay easier.
