We invite you to take part in the development of Learning Briefs (LBs); short, precise, interesting and easy to read write-up (clearly showing the Problem(s) addressed, Objective(s) set, Action(s) taken, and Result(s) realized) which communicates specific intervention(s) you have undertaken not earlier than July 2011 (i.e. FY12, FY13 to-date) and the results arising from the implementation of such interventions. This is an excellent opportunity to show case our successes/failures/challenges as experienced in the course of our program delivery.It is part of ChildFund International Africa Region's efforts in institutionalizing knowledge management. The editing and final production of the best of the LBs generated by various NOs will be supported by the Africa Regional Office for global circulation to enhance learning.Even so, NO level learning is important and therefore the production of LBs for our own NO (across AOs, with partners) consumption is equally encouraged. We hope to use this avenue to gain new ideas and improve on our current program practices; justify our continued efforts in resource mobilization and demonstrate accountability for investment.Kindly take keen note of the required content of the proposed LB: Should be based on rigorous evidence which clearly shows;
what the original question/problem was that we were trying to solve the context in which this issue arose what our starting point or baseline was what was then done (by ChildFund or others) and why what we were able to measure at the end and how what the outcome (not output) was (population based change)In order to tighten your LB and make it worth considering for wider sharing, please ensure the following considerations are met:
There should be no significant gap in the evidence trail ; i.e. any result or information you are using must be consistent in terms of what you actually measured and how. You can clearly claim some sort of attribution for the change observed. That is; you are able to state what it is that your intervention changed. You should be able to relate it clearly to one of the life stages, (0-5, 6-14, 15-24) as this will give it a broad relevance and usefulness across ChildFund globe. The LB should describe a success. Even if the research/intervention did not have out come as you had hypothesized, the reader should see you successfully did what you set out to do, the failure, and our lessons from that.Our understanding is that of all the work we do as an NO, there are probably only two/three where we have a good enough evidence base and documentation/images/graphics to support our claim and enable us to develop something which can be widely used with external audiences (especially donors and policy makers) to convincingly demonstrate that we are an exceptional organization doing exceptional work.
We would therefore appreciate if you submit the first draft of your LBs by November 30, 2013 to allow for internal review before submission to RO for further consideration. All your LBs should be sent to Peter Aduda (Peter will stand in for me/coordinate the Western Regional Office as I proceed on leave from Nov. 20 to Dec 19, 2013) and copied to Maureen, Esther and myself. Apart from all of us, Kisumu AO has an intern (Ms Joy Zaiah) who will also assist Peter in coordinating the development of the learning briefs. Kindly also do copy her at joyz...@yahoo.com on all the communications regarding the learning briefs.
Regards
Erick

Subject: Call for Learning Briefs
Dear AMs/PCs,
Hope you are keeping fine as we approach the month of festivities, December!
We invite you to take part in the development of Learning Briefs (LBs); short, precise, interesting and easy to read write-up (clearly showing the Problem(s) addressed, Objective(s) set, Action(s) taken, and Result(s) realized) which communicates specific intervention(s) you have undertaken not earlier than July 2011 (i.e. FY12, FY13 to-date) and the results arising from the implementation of such interventions. This is an excellent opportunity to show case our successes/failures/challenges as experienced in the course of our program delivery.
It is part of ChildFund International Africa Region's efforts in institutionalizing knowledge management. The editing and final production of the best of the LBs generated by various NOs will be supported by the Africa Regional Office for global circulation to enhance learning.
Even so, NO level learning is important and therefore the production of LBs for our own NO (across AOs, with partners) consumption is equally encouraged. We hope to use this avenue to gain new ideas and improve on our current program practices; justify our continued efforts in resource mobilization and demonstrate accountability for investment.
Kindly take keen note of the required content of the proposed LB: Should be based on rigorous evidence which clearly shows;
* what the original question/problem was that we were trying to solve
* the context in which this issue arose
* what our starting point or baseline was
* what was then done (by ChildFund or others) and why
* what we were able to measure at the end and how
* what the outcome (not output) was (population based change)
In order to tighten your LB and make it worth considering for wider sharing, please ensure the following considerations are met:
* There should be no significant gap in the evidence trail ; i.e. any result or information you are using must be consistent in terms of what you actually measured and how.
* You can clearly claim some sort of attribution for the change observed. That is; you are able to state what it is that your intervention changed.
* You should be able to relate it clearly to one of the life stages, (0-5, 6-14, 15-24) as this will give it a broad relevance and usefulness across ChildFund globe.
* The LB should describe a success. Even if the research/intervention did not have out come as you had hypothesized, the reader should see you successfully did what you set out to do, the failure, and our lessons from that.
