Subject: Weekly Security Updates

Dear Team,

Herewith please find the security update for your information and necessary action.

Security Tip! – Managing threatening phone calls and SMS’s

Recently, several staff have received threatening phone calls or SMS from unknown callers.  Investigations of these incidents have revealed that most of these calls have been traced to local Kenyan prisons.  They appear to be randomly made by prisoners.

Typically, the caller will use intimidation techniques or threats to gain your attention while they engage you into the conversation.  They will attempt to gain your personal information and then make money demands on you before threatening you and possibly your family.  Some examples of the recent calls and SMSs have taken the following forms:

  1. ‘We know you very well - your residence, your wife, your children, your car, and all your movements. We have been sent to eliminate you by somebody who is your enemy; we are ready to save your life if you cooperate and send 10,000 Ksh [or other amount] through M-pesa to this number. If you don’t send you will lose your life within the next two days! DON’T INVOLVE THE POLICE!’

  1. ‘We are Mungiki or any other organized criminal gang and we have been monitoring you for long. To enjoy our protection choose to become a member or we kill you. Alternatively, cooperate with us and sent 3,000 Ksh for your protection through this number.’

  1. ‘Please call me, I have a very urgent, important message for you’; or simply, ‘Please call me.’

  1. ‘Harry, we have been looking for you for many years and we have now caught up with you.

  1. ‘We are out here and we are going to throw in an explosive device and kill all of you in the house, how much money do you have with you there, where are your credit cards, if we get in there you will die, we just out here in the next few minutes we shall gain entry and you will see. We will tell you where to drop the money. If you fail, that is the end of you.’ Etc.

In the event you happen to receive such a call or SMS from an unknown person, it is advised that you: -

  1. Never identify yourself such as “Hello, this is..,” if you don’t know who the caller is.

  1. If an SMS, never attempt to respond.

  1. If called: Listen, be calm and try to digest the call without giving out any details.

  1. Once you hang up: Mark the number, do not call back, and do not accept the number again no matter how many times it calls.

  1. If the caller is persistent, make sure a report is made as soon as possible to the police and Security manager for appropriate follow up.

  1. The recipient should also take the necessary security precautions while the threats are being investigated to determine the source and motive.

If you are a recipient, please save the number and notify the Safety & Security Manager or Police as soon as possible for further investigation.

Regards,

Alfred Agengo
