I would do some test prints with maybe a flat part of ABS, 5 layers thick and then put a gap between the next layer of ABS (5 layers again) for support material, and repeat this a few times in the test part. What you can do is manually change the extrusion temperature as it prints. Start high and work your way down.. Maybe you have to print at thinner slices for HIPs and ABS for them to stick. What are your machines specs?

Machine is self made with mach3 but I have 2 Jhead mkV 0.4 heads. Tried 0.15-0.25 layer thickness...What should be the support gap between support and model? Now 0.2 but could it be 0? Support is now set to medium. Both prints nicely when printed directly to kapton tape.

I would assume zero between HIPS and ABS would be OK as it will dissolve.
