The only usable implementation of this algorithm was not available commercially, according to Whittle. It had taken a prominent mining company many years and millions of dollars to develop. Jeff recognised the need for optimisation software in mining and offered to write an open-pit optimiser program for Newmont, based on the Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm. When Newmont declined to commit funding to what it considered such a risky project, Jeff, with the support of his wife, Ruth, decided to write it himself.

Jeff initially trained as an experimental physicist at the University of Manchester in the UK, gaining a degree with Honours in Physics. Jeff, Ruth and their young family emigrated from England to Australia in 1961. He was a pioneer of the computing age and started programming computers in 1962 while working at Defence Standard Laboratories in Melbourne. Jeff and Ruth became naturalised Australians in 1977.

Over the last 13 years Gerald has joined forces with founder Jeff Whittle, the originator of Whittle mining optimisation software, to develop Whittle Consulting. As Managing Director, Gerald is the thought leader on the Money Mining philosophy and associated optimisation techniques. He facilitates training courses, workshops, management presentations, and directs optimisation strategies and model design for the Enterprise Optimisation studies undertaken. Gerald has more than 30 years of experience in business planning, analysis and change management in a range of industries in Australia and internationally. This includes Finance Director of a European airline, Financial Controller - Europe Africa for DHL, Change Manager, Treasurer, Factory Accountant at General Motors Australia. Jeff trained as an experimental physicist but started to program in 1962 and now calls himself a Computerist. He became involved with the mining industry in 1979. In 1984 he and his wife Ruth started Whittle Programming Pty Ltd and he wrote the first of the Whittle optimization packages. Over the next sixteen years he developed a series of mining optimization packages before the company was sold to Gemcom Software International who now market the Gemcom-Whittle optimization software worldwide. In about 2000 Jeff started to work on mine scheduling optimization software. Continuous development of this software has resulted in the Prober series of optimizers used by Whittle Consulting. Ruth has an honours degree in French from the University of London. After marrying Jeff in 1954, she devoted herself full-time to raising their six children, five sons and a daughter. When she and Jeff established Whittle Programming in 1984, Ruth undertook the marketing of Jeff's software and it was sold in fifty-four countries.
