"Season of the Witch" is a song by Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan released in August 1966 on his third studio album, Sunshine Superman. The song is credited to Donovan, although sometime collaborator Shawn Phillips has also claimed authorship.[5] Because of a dispute with Donovan's record company, a UK edition with the song was not released until June 1967.

"Season of the Witch" was recorded at the CBS studios in Hollywood, California, where most of Sunshine Superman was recorded.[6] According to Donovan, he and Phillips wanted a "rock-combo sound" for the song and chose some local musicians from the local clubs.[6] They included Lenny Matlin on keyboards, Don Brown on lead electric guitar, Bobby Ray on bass and "Fast" Eddie Hoh on drums.[6] Donovan played the second guitar part, as he explained in his autobiography:

In a retrospective song review for AllMusic, Lindsay Planer commented: "Few songs so perfectly reflect the dawn of the psychedelic pop era as aptly as Donovan's 'Season of the Witch' ... Both lyrically as well as musically, the languid and trippy contents project a dark foreboding atmosphere [and] a sort of sinister tale of paranoia and the paranormal".[7] John Bush called the song "easily [one of the two] the highlights of the album ... a chugging eve-of-destruction tale".[8]

So many great moments in movies and TV shows have the song Season of The Witch. I tried to find a full list but couldn't find anything complete. I would watch something just because the song is in it. Anyone else?

Hmm, hmm

When I look out my window
Many sights to see
And when I look in my window
So many different people to be
That it's strange, so strange
It's very strange to me

You've got to pick up every stitch (Gonna be)
You've got to pick up every stitch (Gonna be, gonna be)
You've got to pick up every stitch
Oh no, must be the season of the witch
Must be the season of the witch
Must be the season of the witch

(Gonna be)

When I look over my shoulder (What happens then?)
What do you think I see? (Mmm)
Some other cat looking over (Shadoop, shadoop)
Over the shoulder at me (Ahh, at me)
And he's strange, so strange (So strange)
He's very strange to me

You've got to pick up every stitch (Gonna be)
You've got to pick up every stitch (Gonna be, gonna be)
Beatniks are out to make it rich
Oh no, must be the season of the witch
Must be the season of the witch
Must be the season of the witch

Witch, witch
Said it must be the season, must be the season, must be the season (Witch)
Said it must be the season, must be the season, must be the season (Of the witch)
Said it must be the season, must be the season, must be the season (Witch) (You've got to pick up every stitch)
Said it must be the season, must be the season, must be the season (Witch) (You've got to pick up every stitch)
Said it must be the season, must be the season, must be the season (Witch)
(Must be the season of the witch)
Witch (Must be the season of the witch)

Witch, witch
Witch, witch
Witch, witch
Witch, witch

My heart skipped a beat when I found out she was covering this song since I was a fan of it beforehand; I had a hunch that the psychedelic-rock track would be easily translated by Lana into something authentically herself and retaining the essence of the original. Lana doubles down on the supernatural themes of the song by layering her haunting vocals and some constructive instrumentation which holds her voice high. Although the memorable spooky guitar picking is less prominent in her cover, which I do miss.

The Salem witch trials, the most famous in the New World, began May 27, 1692 in Salem Village, Massachusetts. A doctor said witchcraft was why three young girls were having fits, spasms and outbursts of screaming. The girls claimed that three women had put a spell on them.

One woman confessed, saying the Devil had recruited her. She named others in the community as witches. She was found guilty and hanged. But that was only the start. Five more people were found guilty and hanged in July. Thirteen more were hanged in the following months. Seven people died in jail awaiting trial. Another person was stoned to death.

The trials slowed as the outbursts did. The governor ended the trails after hearing that his wife had been accused of witchcraft. In 1711, Massachusetts courts gave restitution to the heirs of people who were killed and jailed.

A: The title is a reference to the medieval European practice of accusing women of witchcraft and often executing them. The song uses this historical context to explore the idea of change and the unknown.

All Hallow's Eve. Deep within the Haunted Forest, beyond the old gypsy camp, shadows gather in a place known as Raven's Hollow. Strange chants echo through the trees and join rhythmic drumming, summoning forth creatures of the night. No one enters these woods after dark, for this night begins the Season of the Witch. Nox Arcana invites you on a musical journey into the shadowy realm of witchcraft with spellbinding melodies and wicked orchestrations to enchant the witching hour.
Joseph Vargo states, "Season of the Witch offers a mixture of witch lore ranging from Halloween tales and gypsy legends to grim fables, centering around the mysterious realm of Raven's Hollow. I created the concept for Raven's Hollow 20 years ago and have since incorporated it into The Dark Tower mythos as a place where witches gather to perform arcane rites. I have many friends who are practicing witches and I've always been intrigued by the concept of ancient ritual magick. This album explores the various aspects of the craft, both good and evil, with witches who are enchantingly beautiful as well as those who are very, very wicked."

This song appears as the theme for most releases of the TV series internationally, both in English and dubbed. Exceptions include the United States, where We Are W.I.T.C.H. is used, and Italy, where the Italian theme song is used.

All TV series versions of the song are only one minute long, as they do not repeat the verses from the start like the full version does. (The season 1 opening can be seen here.) Most dubs translate the lyrics instead of using the English version, with the German dub being a notable exception.

For the second season of the TV series, to accompany the brand-new opening sequence, a remix of this theme was composed by David Vadant.[1] This version has not been released separately (whether full-length or otherwise), so it can only be heard as part of the TV series.

However, many dubs did not use the remixed melody and instead simply used the season 1 version again. Of the languages available on DVD for season 2, the remix is heard in English, Polish, and Russian, while the Czech, Hungarian, and Turkish dubs have the same mix as in season 1.

The French version of the song has a slight alteration with additional lyrics, similar to that of the pre-production demo version. However, it is still the same overall one-minute length as the end music is slightly shorter. Other dubs follow the English melody.

The French version of the season 1 opening features an extended scene during that part of the song, which is not seen in any other version of the opening sequence. The end of the French opening is correspondingly shortened along with the song.

Unlike in the first season, the season 2 video is essentially unchanged from the English opening, other than the writing being in French and the end text stating "Dimension W.I.T.C.H.", a unique title used for the second season only in French. The season 2 opening is notably more synchronized to the music compared to the season 1 version. However, due to the altered melody of the French version, it is somewhat desynchronized from the video compared to the song in other languages.

An early one-minute version of the song with different vocals was heard on SIP Animation's now-defunct website.[2][3] Unlike the singer of all the official English-language versions of the song (both the full-length and TV series versions), the demo singer has a prominent foreign accent.

During his set, the former Led Zeppelin frontman covered Donovan's 1966 track Season Of The Witch, a song which often makes an appearance within his solo performances, including during his Dublin show on Halloween night. However, this time, for the first time ever, Plant was joined on stage by the man who wrote it.

Following the performance, Donovan took to Facebook to recall the moment, writing: "it was historic to sing my song Season Of The Witch with Robert Plant and Saving Grace, a song that Robert has included in his concerts for some time.
